Willard Eugene "Gene" "Killer" Brown, 69, of Danville went home to be with the Lord September 11, 2011.

He was a retired coal miner of Bethlehem Mines, Twilight.

He was born July 12, 1942 and was a son of the late Jess and Nannie Green Brown.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Loretta May Brown; brothers, Keith Brown and Ricky Allen Brown.

He is survived by his second wife, Pauline Hudson Brown;  daughter, Marie "ReRe" and Kenny Smith of Danville;  son, Eugene Brown and Jessica of St. Albans;  grandchildren, Sally Runion, Natasha Adams and Jesse Ray Smith of Danville, Baxter Brown, Ashley Brown and Dakota;  five great-grandchildren, Prissy Dolson, Eli, Tye and Noa Adams, Rusty Runion; one step-grandson, Zac Hudson;  brothers, Herbert Brown of Woodville and Raymond Brown of Danville;  sisters, Doris DeWeese of Madison, Mildred Miller of Jarrells Valley, Anna Ruth Lovejoy of Rock Creek and Cheryl Price of Quinland.

OBITUARY:

Gurnie Keith Brown, 63, of Madison went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 29, 2008 in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, WV.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Nannie Brown; son Brian Keith Brown; daughter, Lisa Gail Brown; and granddaughter, Alisha Marie Brown.

Keith was many things to many people - loving husband, son, father, grandfather, brother and friend, but most of all he was loved and cherished by all that knew him.  He always had a smile on his face, a laugh in his heart, and love for others twinkled in his eye.  He touched many lives and will be missed by all. He was always quick to offer help, advice, or a shoulder on which to cry.  Keith was an active member of the West Madison Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee.  He loved all his church family.  He was a great Christian man who relied on the Lord in good times and bad.  He was truly an inspiration to his family.  He was retired from Bethlehem Mines #131 at Van.

He is survived by the love of his life, best friend and wife of 45 years, Barbara R. Harless Brown;  one daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Mike White of Charleston;  five grandsons, Brandon and Blake Brown of Madison and Christian, Cody and Crestyn White all of Charleston;  three brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Mary of Alkol, Willard Eugene of Danville, Raymond and Pam of Danville;  four sisters and brothers-in-law Mildred Miller of Danville, Doris (D.J.) Deweese and Joe of Madison, Anna Lovejoy and Rick of Rock Creek, Cheryl Price and Phil of Uneeda;  niece and nephews who all loved their Uncle Keith and looked up to him as a strong Godly man.  He was also survived by a host of friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Monday, June 2 at West Madison Baptist Church, Madison with Pastor James Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 pm Sunday at Handley Funeral Home, Danville.

•  The Lakota West High School Booster Club honors the memory of Coach Steve Cummins by annually awarding a $1,000 scholarship to both a male and female senior student athlete.  Coach Cummins brought inspiration to the soccer program during his tenure from 1983 to 2003, taking a struggling program and developing it into a powerhouse with a winning record, including 11 GMC Championships.

From the time of his arrival at Lakota preceding the start of the 1983 season until his untimely death during the 2003 season Steve Cummins was the guiding light of Lakota Soccer.

In 1983 Cummins took over a Lakota program that had produced just one winning season in the first seven years of its existence.  That was all soon to change.  Lakota posted a winning season in 1984 and in every one of the 12 seasons to follow.  When Lakota split into Lakota East and Lakota West in 1997 Cummins cast his fortune with West and kept the Firebirds on the winning side of the ledger for an additional seven seasons.

Although Cummins upgraded the schedules his Lakota teams played to include all the top teams in Cincinnati and many from Columbus and Dayton, he guided his teams to 20 consecutive winning seasons.

Cummin's influence on Lakota soccer reached beyond the boundries of his own team.  His wise consul and advice to the fledgling girls soccer program in the early years at Lakota helped to propel them to a stature equaling that of his boys teams.  In addition, when Lakota split in 1997 it was his former assistant coach and star player, Dan Landrum, that took over the Lakota East program, bringing them to state wide prominence and the district's first Division 1 final four appearance in 1999.  Indeed, Cummin's influence on Cincinnati soccer has been immense.  At the time of his death the head coaches of three successful Cincinnati high school programs besides his own were his former assistants.

Cummin's final record as a head coach, all in the Lakota School District, was 255 -80-65 (71.9% winning percentage).  He was the 6th winningest coach in the history of Ohio High School boys soccer and was steadily climbing the Ohio career win ladder.  Only 50 years old at the time of his passing, he was on a pace that could have led to his becoming the winningest Ohio coach of all time.

Cummins arrival at Lakota came shortly after the Thunderbirds had entered the Greater Miami Conference.  Playing in what was at that time a six team league, Lakota had never placed in higher than third.  In subsequent years, Cummin's teams placed in the top two sixteen times.  He won or shared an unprecedented eleven GMC championships including a run of seven consecutive from 1988 through 1994.  His total included nine Lakota championships and two Lakota West championships, the latter coming while playing in a ten member GMC.

Before 1983 Lakota's seven year cumulative record in the state tournament was 1-7.  Cummin's Lakota teams won 48 of 68 tournament games for a winning percentate of 71%.  He coached six teams which reached the state final 8, and his 2000 and 2003 teams went on to the state final four where they lost to the eventual state champions in both years.

His achievements have been recognized by his peers with a Southwest Ohio, a Butler County, two Cincinnati, and six GMC Coach of the Year awards.

Cummins was a student of the game and a fixture on the national coaching scene.  He achieved his "A" national coaching license in 1988, one of the first coaches in Ohio to do so.  He served on the senior coaching staff of the Club Ohio Dynamo select program for 12 summers, taking six Dynamo teams to the national final four, including 1994 when his U-17 team won the national championship.  He also coached 11 select teams to Ohio State Cup championships, more than any other boys coach in Ohio.

In Cummin's youth, soccer was not a high school interscholastic sport in Ohio.  He was introduced to soccer by two English emplyees of his father.  They played on local club teams and by the age of 15 Cummins had joined them playing in the adult club leagues around Columbus.  He went on to become the goal keeper for Miami University in 1971 and 1972.  After serving a stint in the military, he returned to Miami and played for the University's 1975 and 1976 teams.

Upon graduation from Miami in 1977, Cummins began his teaching career in Columbus.  He supplemented his income by playing semiprofessional soccer for the Olympic and Germania soccer clubs continuing an active playing career through the 1985 summer season.  Cummins began his high school soccer coaching career at Upper Arlington High school in 1979 when he was put in charge of the freshman team.  His next coaching and teaching spot was Lakota.

Cummins has stated that when he left his hometown of Columbus back in 1983, he did so under the impression that his stop in West Chester would be a temporary one, the first of many different coaching jobs.  He later stated, "Now I can't imagine leaving.  You never think you're going to stay anywhere this long, but we really like this community and you couldn't ask for a better environment to coach in."  We now know he will never leave the community.  He leaves behind his wife Jill, and his two children, Evan and Caitlin.  He also leaves a standard of coaching excellence that will serve as a beacon for all Lakota coaches to follow.

Tommy K. Whitmore, 66, of Madison went to be with his Savior on Thursday, June 24, 2010, after a battle with cancer.

He grew up in Gordon and attended Van High School. After a tour in Vietnam, Tommy returned to marry his sweetheart, Charlotte Ann Clay of Uneeda.  He worked as a Teamster in Ohio, UMWA coal miner in West Virginia, and spent a short time as owner of the Coal Miner's Kitchen restaurant in Uneeda.

His passions were his faith in God, his granddaughters, Kendra and Abby, WVU Mountaineer football, Cincinnati Reds baseball, spending time at his camp in Summersville, traveling with family and friends, and making people laugh.

Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Harry Whitmore, on April 24, 1988;  and his mother, Oudra Hilderbrand Whitmore, preceded him in death by six days, on June 18, 2010.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 43 years, Charlotte Ann Whitmore of Madison;  his two children, Amy Whitmore Brown (Mike) of Madison and Jamy Ray Whitmore (Kelly and step-children Chase, Heidi, Danielle, and Boone) of Prenter;  granddaughters, Kendra Whitmore and Abby Brown;  brother, Charles Daniel Whitmore of Van;  sisters, Diana Whitmore Griffith of Milton, Fla., and Judy Whitmore Young of Charleston;  his church brothers and sisters;  and many friends and family.

Tommy will always be remembered as a loving and laughing son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Funeral service will be held at Bible Baptist Church in Danville, of which he was a member, at 2 p.m. Monday, June 28, with Pastor John Barker and the Rev. Arnold Price officiating.  Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Handley Funeral Home in Danville.

She was a four-year resident of St. Albans, formerly of Madison.  Vivian was the former owner and operator of Boone Taxidermy, Madison, and the former owner of Vivian's School of Dance, Madison.  She was a member of Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans, and an avid member of Freedom Fighters at her church.  She was a former Sunday school teacher and Junior Church Leader at West Madison Baptist Church, Madison.

Vivian is survived by her husband, Lloyd D. Price Sr.; daughters and sons-in-law, Monica E. and Stephen Kirby of St. Albans, Cynthia R. and Rick Farley of Charlotte, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Cherri Price of Madison; her parents, Woodrow and Alga Dolin, who are 17-year resident of Fountain, Fla., formerly of Madison; sister and brother-in-law, Scherri and Arthur Napier of Madison; brother, Woody Dolin and his companion, Carolyn, of Madison.  Vivian was blessed to be MaMaw to eight grandchildren who were the love and joy of her life.

MADISON - Lewis Sidney Vande Linde, 25, of Madison was killed Tuesday in a mine accident at Armco Steel's No. 9 mine at Twilight, Boone County.

A member of the family said Vande Linde was operating a battery powered shuttle car when the battery exploded.

The family spokesman said Vande Linde apparently jumped from the vehicle and was caught between the wall of the mine and the shuttle car.

Vande Linde was a member of the UMW.

Surviving: wife, Susan;  son, Christopher;  mother, Mrs. Norma G Vande Linde of Madison;  brother, David of Columbus, Ohio;  grandmother, Mrs. Maggie Vande Linde of Madison.

Service will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Hunter-Hunter Funeral Home, Madison, with Evangelist Brady Duty officiating.  Burial will be in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.

ANNA KATHERYN VANDELINDE, 78, of Emerald Isle, NC, died Monday, August 14, 2006 at her home.

She was predeceased by: her parents, James Freer & Maggie Issacs Scites;  one brother, James Freer Scites Jr.;  one sister, Saundra Scites Matter.

Mrs. VandeLinde is survived by her husband, Dennie VandeLinde of the home;  two sons, Stephen VandeLinde of Charlotte, NC and Tony VandeLinde of Cummins, GA;  one brother, Herbert Scites of Hurricane, WV;  three sisters, Betty Austin of Lexington, KY, Bonnie Weaver of West Hamlin, WV and Peggy Mathaney of Atlanta, GA;  six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at 11:00AM on Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, Swansboro Chapel, with Rev. Mike Wilkinson officiating.  Burial will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.

The family received friends Wednesday evening from 7-9PM at Jones Funeral Home, 406 Hammocks Road, Swansboro, NC.
