Smoot and his young family left Rowan County (North Carolina) and settled on the Pond Fork of the Little Coal River in Logan County, Virginia (now Boone County, West Virginia), bringing a number of slaves with them.  There he found Price cousins, children of his Aunt Eleanor (Smoot) Price.  It is traditional that the Price family was among the first settlers in that section of West Virginia.”

{from pages 293-295}

  (7)  During the period of the 1700s, it was a custom of the time for a father to name his 1st son after the son’s paternal grandfather and to name the 2nd son after the maternal grandfather.  Benjamin Price (1749 - 1838) named his first son Thomas Price (1777 - before 1855) apparently after this son’s now unknown paternal grandfather.  This conclusion seems to be valid as the father, Benjamin Price (1749 - 1838) named the apparent 2nd son, John Smoot Price (1780/90 - 1842) after the son’s known maternal grandfather, John Smoot, Sr. (1707-1789).  Further research will have to be done at the Hall of Records in Annapolis, Maryland, to attempt to determine if the father of Benjamin Price (1749-1838) of St. Mary’s County, Maryland, was indeed named Thomas Price or another named Benjamin Price.

  (8)  See: Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas, The Goodspeed Publishing Co. (1890), page 665:  “James M(acklin) Price,    •   •   •    Benjamin Price, the grandfather of the principal of this sketch was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and was captured by the Tories while on Long Island, and was thrown overboard from the vessel.  Instead of being drowned, as they had expected, he made his escape to shore.”

  (9)  See: Archives of Maryland, Muster Rolls and other Records of Service of Maryland Troops in the American Revolution, 1775- 1783, Vol. 18, published by the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore (1900), pages 149-150: Musters of Maryland Troops, Vol. 1, First Regiment PRICE, BENJA(MIN), Rank: pt. Enlisted (?), Discharged: 1 Nov (17)80. Remarks: present.

  (10) See: Chronicles of St Mary’s, (a monthly bulletin of The St. Mary’s County Historical Society, Maryland), Vol. 24, No. 7, July 1976:   The St. Mary’s County Troops sent to New York in Aug 1776 to engage & stop the British Troops.  Many of the Maryland troops were killed or wounded and many were taken as prisoners, some to be put in British prison ships, but the British were stopped for the time being and in the final American victory at Yorktown, Va., the men from St. Mary’s County, Maryland, could say “we paved the way to victory.”

  (11)  In reading items numbered 8, 9 and 10 above, we can see that the PRICE FAMILY written tradition of Benjamin Price (1749-1838) being thrown overboard from a British prison ship to be drowned, but escaped by swimming to shore is supported by the Muster Rolls of Maryland Troops of the First Regiment, listing a Private Benjamin Price and is further supported by the publication Chronicles of St. Mary’s showing that the men of St. Mary’s County, Maryland were sent to New York in Aug. 1776 to fight the British and that some were taken as prisoners and put on British prison ships.  To prove beyond a doubt what appears to be correct will need personal research at the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, Maryland, and at the Hall of Records, at Annapolis, Maryland.

(15)   The first settler in the vicinity of Madison, West Virginia, was Thomas Price.  He came from North Carolina, having descended New River and Kanawha River to the mouth of Coal River.  He made his way up by Coal River to the mouth of Little Coal.  Having ascended Little Coal to Newport Branch, now called Danville, he built his cabin in 1804.  About 10 years later [1811- 1814-JBP], he was followed by his father, Benjamin Price and three brothers:  PETER, VERNON and TUNCIL.  Peter Price settled on Pond Fork, Tuncil Price on Spruce Fork, and later removed to Horse Creek, and Vernon Price located on Little Coal just below Danville, the father, Benjamin Price, settled at or near the mouth of Rock Creek (KITH AND KIN, BOONE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA, Vol. XVI (16) (1989).

KITH AND KIN OF BOONE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA, Volume IX, Published By Boone County Genealogical Society, Madison, West Virginia, Aug 1981, pages 45-77 "The Benjamin Price Family of Boone County" by Jean Olafson Harmon, Page 45:

"The first of the Price family to come to what is now Boone County was Benjamin’s son and his wife, Thomas and Elizabeth (Dohoney) Price.  They came circa 1805, either accompanied or soon followed by Phillip Ballard.  Phillip’s brothers, Elijah and Thomas and their families, came a short time later.  Elijah was married to Mildred Dohoney, sister of Elizabeth.  (See Ballard family in KITH and KIN, Vol. VI.) The Prices settled near the mouth of Prices Branch (Danville) and the Ballards settled at what is now West Madison and near the mouth of Rock Creek.

"Thomas Price first appears in the Kanawha County Tax List of 1806 (and again in 1809) which shows he had 1 titheable (male over 16), 2 slaves over 12 years and 1 horse/cattle.  His household in the Kanawha 1810 census included 1 male and 1 female between 26 and 45 years; 1 male and 1 female over 45 years (identity not known); and 2 females under 10 years.  Other Prices are listed in the 1810 and l20 census but there is no record of relationship to Thomas or Benjamin.

"About 1811/12, Thomas’ parents, Benjamin and Eleanor/Nellie (Smoot) Price, joined him in this area, along with sons Saul, Peter, Vernon and Tuncil."

  •   •   •

"While this family was always situated in what is now Boone County, one must remember the genealogy of counties.  They first appear in Kanawha County records.  In 1824, Logan County was formed and they appear in Logan records until 1847, when Boone County was formed.  Thereafter, they appear in Boone records."

  •   •   •

"Thomas Price brought the first slaves to this area.  His father and the Smoots also brought slaves when they settled here."

Page 46 (Bottom) and 47:

"1.  THOMAS PRICE, b. 1777 in St. Marys Co., Md., last appears in 1850 Boone County census.  While his death date is not known, his son-in-law, Chapman Ballard was named administrator of his estate in 1855.  He married Elizabeth Doboney, dau. of Thomas and Hanner Dohoney.  She died sometime before 1840.  Many of our Boone County records mistakenly show her maiden name as DeJournette.  However, Mr. W. H. Allen found their marriage record in Orange County, Va., which states that they were married on 2 Apr 1805 by Rev. George Bingham said that she was the daughter of Hanner Dohoney.

"Thomas Price had a licence for a place of private entertainment and this was a popular 'stopping-off' place for the local gentry, as well as the weary traveler.  After his death, this licence was first transferred to his son-in-law Chapman Ballard in Aug 1855 and later to his other son-in-law, John Hill in Nov 1855."

"One of the children of Benjamin and Eleanor (Smoot) Price, Chloe Price, had not come with the family to Pond Fork but remained in North Carolina where she married Henry Mumford DeJournette.  Chloe was born in 1796 in Culpeper County, Virginia and Henry Mumford was born in 1790 in North Carolina.  In the late l830s, they too moved to present Boone County, settling close to where Benjamin Price lived.  Boone County had not yet been formed and most of the part of it that is drained by Little Coal River, and its tributaries, was still in Logan County.  The family first appeared in this region in the 1840 census of Logan County.  Like other censuses of that time, the only name shown is that of the head of the household, in this case Mumford DeJournette, but the 1840 record shows that he had a wife, one daughter and three sons."
