Myrtle Adonia McClure, 96, of Marmet Health Care Center passed away on Friday, Feb. 18, 2005.

She was born on March 10, 1908, in Sharon, W.Va., the daughter of Joseph and Rosa Cotton.  She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sisters; son, Robert L. McClure and daughter, Wanda L. Crouch.  She was a member of the Sharon Methodist Church and formerly resided at Quarry Manor for many years.

Myrtle is survived by sons, Don McClure and his wife, Sheila, of Elyria, Ohio, Emzy McClure II and wife, Eva, of Wellington, Ohio; daughters, Rose Mary Russell of Campbells Creek, Joyce Moore of Grove City, Ohio, Glenna Farley of Jacksonville, N.C., and Grace Jarrell of Davison, Mich.; 20 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

A family service will be 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, 4203 Salines Drive, Malden, with the Rev. David Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at the Beach Grove Cemetery, Yawkey, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Campbells Creek Church of the Nazarene - Food Pantry, 541 Campbells Creek Drive, Charleston, WV 25306.

The family sends a special "thank you" to the nurses and staff at the Marmet Health Care Center.

Mrs. Alma Mays McClure of St. Louis, Mich., formerly of Yawkey, Lincoln County, died Sunday in a St. Louis hospital after a short illness.

Survivors are her husband, Rexford;  two sons, Author and Donald of St. Louis , Mich.;  a daughter, Carol at home; her mother, Mrs. Cora Mays of Yawkey;  five brothers, Creed, John, Grover and James of Michigan, and Sam of Yawkey;  Three sisters, Mrs. Addie Humphreys, Mrs. Hilda Glinkie of Michigan, and Mrs. Della Saddler of Yawkee;  and five grandchildren.

Services and burial will be held tomorrow in St. Louis.

Mrs. Lottie Abbott, 60, of Alkol, Lincoln County, died yesterday afternoon at Charleston General Hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Abbott was a lifelong resident of Lincoln County.  She was a member of the Sycamore Baptist church at Alkol.

Survivors include the husband, Fred;  four daughters, Mrs. Iola Chapman of Charleston, Miss Irene Abbott and Miss Emma Jean Abbott, both of Charleston and Miss Eloise, at home;  three sons, Herman and Cleo of Alkol and Homer of Charleston;  one stepdaughter, Mrs. Gladys Mason of Sissonville;  one stepson, Charles Abbott of Morrisvale;  six brothers, Elbert and Roscoe Vickers of Yawkey, Howell, Glen and Homer, all of Alkol, Shell of Michigan;  six sisters, Mrs. Emmer Vickers and Mrs Hassel Huffman, both of Alkol, Mrs Ebi Hill of Yawkey, Mrs. Clay Hill of Sissonville road, Mrs. Elmer Hagerman of Rand, Mrs Mamie Wade of Michigan and 11 grandchildren.

He was a retired well driller from Owens-Libby-Owens Gas Co., a former carrier for The Charleston Gazette and the Daily Mail, a Christian, a deacon of Morrisvale Missionary Baptist Church and a former deacon, choir director and Sunday school teacher at Sycamore Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving: wife, Garnette Matthews Vickers; daughter, Kathleen Wadsworth of Panaca, Nev.; sons, Harry and Jack, both of Peterstown, Kenneth L. of Alkol; sisters, Arzella Hill of Charleston, Alma Huffman of Alkol; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Arzella Vickers Hill, 96, of Charleston died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at home.

She was a homemaker, a native of Lincoln County, a member of Sycamore Baptist Church, Alkol, and attended Sugar Creek Community Church, Charleston.  She was preceded in death by husband, Henry Clay Hill and son Harold Clay Hill.

Surviving: sons, George of Elkview, James "Mac" of Charleston, Darris of Jackson, Mich.;  daughters, Jo Messenger of South Charleston, Arlene Pettit of Dunbar, Elinor Lloyd of Charleston, Anna Gay Childers of Jackson, Gloria Thomas of Sissonville;  sister, Alma Huffman, of Alkol;  16 grandchildren;  28 great-grandchildren;  eight great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. W.F. "Johnson" Vickers officiating.  Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

JULIAN - Mildred Vickers, 81, of Julian, formerly of Alkol, departed this life to be with the Lord on May 23, 2002, after a short illness.

Awaiting her in Heaven were her parents, Ellis Linville and Lena Abbott; stepmother, Vida Linville; husband, G. Homer Vickers; brothers Oather and Maxwell Linville.

In addition to being a loving mother of six children, she was also an active member for 62 years at Sycamore Grove Baptist and First Baptist of Woodville churches.   Mildred was truly a child of God and was always faithful in church attendance and helping her children and friends.

Survivors include sons, the Rev. W. F. "Johnny" of Julian, Denzil of Huntington, and Michael of Woodville; daughters, Carolyn Hill of Julian, Sandra McLaughlin of Alkol, Libby Smith of St. Albans; brothers, Harold, Ernest and the Rev. Dick Linville; sisters, Ruth Pridemore, Betty Lewis, Marge Taylor, Vonnie Clay, Sue Myers, Sharon Sayre; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Damon P. "Jack" Thompson, 86, of Alkol died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in CAMC General Hospital, Charleston, after a short illness.

Jack was a retired postmaster from the Alkol Post Office and owner/operator of Thompson's Grocery at Alkol.  He was a member of Griffithsville Masonic Lodge 71 for 49 years, a member of the former Alkol Lions Club, an Army veteran of World War II, attended Sycamore Grove and Beach Grove Baptist Churches and was a graduate of Duval High School's class of 1938.

Jack is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter and her husband, Rita and Sam Saul of Alkol; grandchildren and their spouses, Phoebe and Barry Harless of Griffithsville, John and Cammie Saul of Hamlin and Joe and Jamie Saul of Alum Creek; great-grandchildren, Baley, Natalie, Tanner, Brook, Braden, Riley, Mattie and Caroline; and a sister, Nona Thompson of Alkol.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors Oshel Bell and Henry Estep officiating.  Burial with Masonic graveside rites conducted by Griffithsville Masonic Lodge 71 will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.

She was a postmaster for 32 years at Alkol and attended Sycamore Grove and Beech Grove Baptist churches. She was a WAVE in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Damon P. Jack Thompson; and brothers, Mancel Miller and Victor Flib Miller.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Rita and Sam Saul of Alkol; grandchildren and spouses, Phoebe and Barry Harless of Griffithsville, John and Cammie Saul of Hamlin and Joe and Jamie Saul of Alum Creek; great-grandchildren, Baley, Natalie, Tanner, Brook, Braden, Riley, Mattie and Carolina; sisters, Dorothy Meadows and Jane Weaver, both of McConnelsville, Ohio, and Nadine Dent of Beaver, Ohio; and brothers, Jimmy Miller of South Charleston and Larry Miller of York, S.C.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 15, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating.  Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to give a special thanks to her caregivers, Rita Gillenwater, Edna Hager, Janet Cooper and Rebecca Lilly.

Elmer Blackburn White, 85, of Salt Rock, W.Va., passed away Thursday, May 16, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital.  He was born March 2, 1917, in Cabell County, a son of the late Ballard and Hettie Stone White.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred White and two brothers, Opie and Clinton White.

He was a retired finisher with Blenko Glass, with 42 years of service, and a farmer.  He was a member of the Calvary Apostolic Church of Hurricane for over 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dahlia Beckett White of Salt Rock;  a daughter, Barbara Kay Blankenship of Salt Rock;  a son and daughter-in-law, Billy Roger and Rita White of Little Rock, Ark.;  four grandchildren, Sherri Legg and her husband, Bobby, Cheryl Kane and her husband, Jim, and Shelley White and Cassie White, both of Arkansas;  five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Moss White of Florida, Naaman White of Milton and James White of Marietta.

She was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church and worked with crippled children at the former Morris Memorial Hospital and Huntington Orthopedic Hospital.

ONA - Lelia Frances Smith, 84, of Ona, Cabell County, died March 23, 1997, in Americare-Putnam after a short illness.

She was a member of Central Methodist Church, Huntington.

Surviving: son, Bobby L. of Nitro; daughter, Marion Scarberry of Huntington; brother, William Copen of Nitro; sisters, Claudine Pennington of Charleston, Virginia Jordan of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

The body was donated to Human Gift Registry, Marshall University, Huntington.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Kanawha County Unit, 403 Ott Building, Charleston, W.Va. 25301.  Information provided by Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro.

He was retired from MacLean Corp.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Kyle Copen.

William is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lottie and Eddie Skiles of Charleston; sister, Claudine Pennington of Charleston; nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Graceland Memorial Park, Ruth, with the Rev. Damron Bradshaw officiating.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Salvation Army, 301 Tennessee Ave., Charleston, WV 25302 or to your favorite charity.

Claudine Copen Pennington Obituary

Claudine Pennington, 87, of Charleston passed away Thursday, December 3, 2009, at home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 12, 1921, in Charleston, and was a daughter of the late Marshall and Mamie Larter Copen.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jackie Ray Pennington.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  Claudine loved and took pride in her family, home, yard and garden.  She had a love of flowers and her pets.  She was a member of South Ruffner Freewill Baptist Church, where she was active in teaching the young children Sunday school and other various church projects.

Claudine is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Ray; one daughter, Brenda Hensley and her husband, Oscar, of St. Albans and their daughter, Amie Dutey and her husband, Jim, of Columbus, Ohio; one son, Mark Pennington and his wife, Jennifer, of Hurricane and their children, Erin, Megan, Hanna, Jack and John; and her loving and devoted dog, Crickett.

A tribute to the life of Claudine will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Harding Funerals & Cremations, Kanawha City, with the Rev. Tom Williams and the Rev. Lee Turley officiating.  Burial will follow in Mount Alpha Cemetery, Charleston.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to her great-niece, Emily Surface, for all her love and care.
