He was a retired operator from FMC with 37 years' service, a lifelong resident of Lincoln County and a member of Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church, Cross Lanes.

Surviving: daughter, Joan Mitchell of Yawkey; brother, Thurman Sticker of Yawkey; grandsons, Mark, John and Matthew; four great-grandchildren; caregiver, Jean Dillon of Sumerco.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Elder Willard Bird officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Martha Gwendolyn Shriver McNeely, 95, of Holly, Mich., formerly of Charleston, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013, at Clarebridge Senior Living Center, Holly, Mich. Gwen was born on a farm in Rutland, Ohio, to the late Saul L. and Mattie (Griffith) Shriver. Her family moved from Ohio to Madison, W.Va., when Gwen was ready for high school, where she attended and then graduated from Scott High School.  Gwen attended Glenville State Teachers College for two years and received a standard normal teaching certificate.

She would work the next seven years in the Boone County schools at Bald Knob, Williams Mountain, Prenter, Nellis, Laurel City and Madison Grade School.  During World War II she was also a counselor for the Women's Land Army.  In September 1946 Gwen was selected Boone County 4-H club agent, a position that she held for the next four years.

After her marriage on December 26, 1949, Gwen and Byron, who was a professional Boy Scout executive, moved to Racine. Still later, in 1963, Gwen's husband was promoted to assistant Scout executive at Charleston and the family moved to Cross Lanes.  It was during this time that Gwen worked at Baker Elementary School in Nitro.  She also enrolled part time at Marshall University, pursuant to renewal of her standard normal teaching certificate.  She completed her bachelor's degree in 1967.  That summer her husband was promoted to Scout executive at Chillicothe, Ohio, where Gwen was hired at Tiffin Elementary School as the fifth grade teacher.

When Byron was transferred to Lexington, Ky., in 1972, Gwen was hired to teach sixth grade full time at Yates Elementary School. Gwen continued teaching there until her retirement seven years later. While living in Lexington, Gwen was active in Lafayette Football Boosters, several professional organizations, the American Association of University Women, Mu Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, the Blue Grass Retired Teachers Association and the First Presbyterian Church.

When Gwendolyn (Shriver) McNeely retired from teaching it was said that "she was a tireless worker, loyal friend, a truly professional educator dedicated to high ideals; a person held in high esteem by all who have been privileged to her influence."

It is obvious to those who know her that Gwen McNeely has had an outstanding career as a teacher, youth worker and in community service in three states.  These accomplishments are surpassed many times by her expertise as a homemaker, loving wife and mother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Byron.

She is survived by her sons, Joe McNeely (Lisa) of Holly, Mich., and John McNeely of Ashland, Ohio; brother, John R. Shriver of Texas; sister-in-law, Marcelle Bowne of Charleston; nephew, Bruce Shriver (Kathe) of Stafford, Va.; and grandchildren, Paul McNeely, David McNeely and Kaitlyn McNeely.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 9, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, with Pastor Tracie M. Long officiating. Burial will follow at Boone Memorial Park, Madison.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Byron E. McNeely, 87, husband of Gwendolyn Shriver McNeely, died Tues, Feb. 19, 2008.  Born in Dawes, W.Va., he was a son of the late Dell and Hattie Ferrell McNeely.

A professional scouter with Boy Scouts of America, he served as scout executive in two different councils.  He continued with the scouts, after retirement, as a volunteer and received the Silver Beaver Award.  He received his BS from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, W.Va., then studied at West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va.  A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army, Company 1, 274th Infantry Division, receiving the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Expert Combat Infantry Badge.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, John D. McNeely of Ashland, Ohio, and Joseph B. (Lisa) McNeely of Holly, Mich.; and a sister and brother, Marcelle Bowne and Bernard McNeely, both of Charleston, W.Va.; as well as three grandchildren, Paul, David and Kaitlyn McNeely.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the First Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Ky., conducted by the Rev. Kirk Hall.  Committal services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Boone Memorial Park, Madison, W.Va.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at W.R. Milward Mortuary-Southland.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Bluegrass Council Boy Scouts of America, 415 N. Broadway, Lexington, KY 40507.

CHARLES BEDFORD LAVENDER was born on October 15, 1921 as the 1st of 4 children of Charley Lavender and Alma Pearl Livesay.  He grew up in Chesapeake WV and attended the Chesapeake Elementary School and Marmet Jr. High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army (ser#35444927) in Huntington WV in September 1942 and was assigned to Fort Thomas Ky as Pvt and later assigned to the Signal Corp School at Camp Crowder Mo. (September 1942 - July 1943)and later assigned to Camp Dix New Jersey (July 1943 - August 1943).  He departed from Staten Island NY in August 1943 for North Africia where he arrived in Oran North Africia in September 1943.  He served in the North Africia (German & Italian) and Rome/Southern France (German).  He returned to the United States aboard a Hospital Ship (USS Wisterin) from Naples Italy and arrived in Charleston SC Port.

He was discharged from the U.S. Army with a honorable discharge on August 7, 1945.

He married a Mildred Arlene Lawson from Yawkey WV (Lincoln County) on January 20, 1949 in Cattlesburg KY.  They had 4 children: James Robert Lavender (Sept 20, 1949), Patricia Ann Lavender (August 20, 1950), Rebecca Sue Lavender (April 27, 1953) and Jill Lynn Lavender (August 13, 1959).

Charles was a member of the Chesapeake Lion's club, Charter member and former Fire Chief of the Chesapeake Volunteer Department, V.F.W. Post 8363 (Davey Lew Post), former assistant scout master and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Charles followed his family tradition of working for coal company in Winifrede, WV and later started to work in industries as a electrican (certified by theWV State Fire Marshall as a Master Electrician).  He retired from the Charleston Ordiance Center in South Charleston, WV in 1989.  He spent most of his retirement caring for his grandchildren and doing a lot of wood work as his past time. Charles died on October 13, 1995 at home in Chesapeake WV from a long illness.

Franklin "Dale" Snodgrass Sr., 75, of Charleston, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was a retired painter for C.H. Heist Corp. and a member of the Grace Nazarene Church, South Charleston.  He was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Griffith Snodgrass; daughters, Cynthia Lea Young of St. Albans, Elizabeth Sue Mallory of South Charleston; son Franklin Dale Snodgrass Jr. of South Charleston; brother, Benny Ray Snodgrass of Charleston; sisters, Wanda Grass of Charleston, Genevieve Vandale of South Charleston, Phyllis Permelia of Charleston.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with Pastor Chuck Goddard and Pastor James McCormick officiating.  Burial will be in French Cemetery, South Charleston.

Mrs. Betty Jo Weber, age 36, a resident of the Wakefield community passed away this morning Jan. 22, 1971, at the Clay County Hospital in Flora.

A native of Michigan, Mrs. Weber was born in Isabelle County at Mt. Pleasant on September 8, 1934.  She was the daughter of Hayward H. Stephens and Emma Griffith Stephens.  She was married to Florian Weber on November 30, 1956.  She and her husband have resided in the Wakefield community since that time.

She leaves her husband, Florian and three children; Stephen F., Carolyn S. and Connie L. Weber, all at home.  She also leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs Hayward Stephens of Noble; a brothers, David Stephens of El Paso, Texas and her monther-in-law, Mrs. Pauline Weber of Wakefield.

Funeral services were held in the Noble Christian Church with the Rev. Joe Eggebrecht officiating.  Summers-Rainey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fenimore was a native of Van, having made North Augusta his home for the past 54 years.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Augusta, where he served with the Royal Ambassadors, and was a Navy veteran of World War II.  Mr. Fenimore was a magna-cum-laude graduate of Marshall College with a degree in geology, a retired geologist from E.I. DuPont Company and a registered surveyor.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Anna Stalnaker Fenimore; sons and daughters-in-law, James William Jr. and Valarie Fenimore of Roanoke, Va., Joseph Wade [note: should be Frederick Wade] and Holly Fenimore of Raleigh, N.C., and Joseph Andrew Fenimore of North Augusta, S.C.; grandchildren, Samuel Steven Fenimore, Heidi Suzannah Fenimore, Anna Marie Fenimore and Bronwyn Alexis Fenimore; and a niece, Bronwyn Jean White of Warrenton, Va.

Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Memory Gardens, near Madison.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Funeral Services for Mrs. Jo Anna Stalnaker Fenimore, 82, of Curtis Drive, North Augusta, SC, who entered into rest January 28, 2011, will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o'clock from the Posey Funeral Chapel. Rev. Roy Kiser officiating.  Interment will be Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock in Memory Gardens, Madison, West Virginia.

Mrs. Fenimore was a native of Glenville, West Virginia, having made North Augusta her home for the past 58 years.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta where she taught kindergarten.  Mrs. Fenimore was the President of the first North Augusta Junior Woman's Club, she was active in the Red Cross program at Panic Pond, was a former Regent of the Martintown Road Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Golden Glow Chapter #76.

She was preceded in death by her husband Mr. James William Fenimore, Sr..

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Valerie Fenimore, Jr., Roanoke, VA, Fredrick and Holly Fenimore, Raleigh, NC and Joseph Andrew Fenimore, North Augusta.; four grandchildren, Samuel Fenimore, Heidi Fenimore, Anna Fenimore and Bronwyn Fenimore.

Griffith & Son, in Madison for many years.  Arch was a life-long member of Madison Baptist Church.  He proudly served his country for two years during World War II with the Army Air Force and retired as Lieutenant Colonel with the West Virginia Air National Guard, 130th Airlift Wing.  He was an avid golfer and competed on the golf course until the last few months of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Barbara Griffith Burris, and a great-granddaughter Amanda Griffith.

Roger Dean Griffith, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, following a short illness.

He was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Bluffton, Ohio, and grew up in Logan and Beckley.  He held a degree in pharmacy from West Virginia University where he was president of Kappa Sigma fraternity.  He then graduated from Midshipman School at Northwestern University and served with the Navy in the Pacific Theatre. At the war's conclusion, Roger worked at Scott Brothers Pharmacy and owned Trivillian's Pharmacy for 28 years. Roger and his wife, the late Ann Griffith of the Charleston Daily Mail, traveled the world, visiting more than 37 countries.  He was a member of Village Chapel Presbyterian Church, a former board member of City National Bank, was active with the Friendship Force and served on the resident association council of Edgewood Summit.

He is survived by a daughter, Carolanne Griffith (John) Roberts of Birmingham, Ala., Beth Griffith (David) Reisman of Cincinnati, Ohio; a grandson, Fletcher Haines Griffith Roberts; two granddaughters, Rachel and Sarah Reisman; and dear friend, Ruth Ellison.

A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Edgewood Country Club.

Obituary:

On Thursday December 17, 2009, Staff Sergeant Jake D. Price Jr. flew his final mission to eternity following a courageous battle with cancer, with his family and faithful dog, Aggy, by his side.

Jake was born July 11, 1924, in Madison to Erna and Jake Price Sr.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sue Webb of Ravenswood; brother, Charles Price of Madison; and grandson, Jacob Price of St. Albans.

He was a graduate of Scott High School and attended Marshall University.  Jake was retired from Union Carbide with over 35 years of company service.  He started and ended his career at the Institute Plant with a long-term assignment at the Woodbine, Georgia, plant toward the end of his service.  While on assignment at Woodbine, he resided at Amelia-By-The Sea in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, where he fell in love with the North Florida weather and the 1500-foot fishing pier out back of his ocean front condo.  His kids later dubbed it "Jake's Pier" due to the amount of hours spent there fishing in his spare time.

After retirement, he returned to his pier seasonally until his health no longer allowed it.  In between trips to Fernandina Beach, Jake loved to spend time at his farm in Julian, which he called "The Garden Spot of the World."  His love for gardening and the farm was surpassed only by his love for his family.

Jake was assistant coach at St. Albans Western Little League.  He also was a Cub Scout leader at the Episcopal Church in St. Albans.  Jake was a proud decorated veteran of World War II, where he served in the 445th Bomber Group of the Mighty 8th Air Force, based in Tibbingham, England.  He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Purple Heart while flying 32 missions in a B-24 Bomber as a ball turret gunner.

Jake is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ida; daughter, Dr. Sandra Phinney and husband, Paul; and sons, Tim and Kevin, all of St. Albans; grandchildren, Eric (Lisa) Phinney of Cairo, Egypt, Lauren (Chris) Larson of Arlington, Va., Alison (Phil) Harvey of Geneva, Switzerland, Nicole Price of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Orry Price of St. Albans; five great-grandchildren; sister, Patsy Wiley of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, December 20, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Ave., St. Albans, with Chaplain Pete Thompson officiating.

Friends may visit two hours prior to service at the funeral home.

Juanita Workman Hensley passed away on Aug. 29, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a lengthy illness.

Born to Basil and Dorothy Linville Workman on Sept. 2, 1925, in Madison, she grew up in Madison and was a 1942 graduate of Scott High School.

She lived 75 years of her life in Madison where she was an active member and presence in Madison Methodist Church.  She loved her time as a steward in that church and she valued her many lifelong friends in both the church and town.  There are many in the Madison community who knew her as a loyal generous friend.

After her 2001 marriage to Lemuel Hensley, she moved with him to his home in Culloden and found a new community of friends and church, Hurricane First Baptist.

She is survived by her husband, Lemuel; two children, Martha Joyce Price of Seattle, Wash., and Thomas H. Copher; and a surviving brother, Tom Workman of Chesapeake, Ohio. She was also very close to her two stepchildren, Martha "Marty" Hensley and Richard "Rick" Hensley and his wife, Dianna, and their two children, Randy and John.

She will be well remembered and much missed by her family and circle of friends who feel privileged and richer to have had Juanita in their lives.

Her ashes will be interred at a graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Boone Memorial Park, Madison.  A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday at Madison United Methodist Church with Dr. Frank Frye officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to service at the church.

Jewell Browning Duty, 88, of Madison died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, following an extended illness.

She was the daughter of the late Bert and Norma Browning and was preceded in death by her husband, Naamon Duty; brothers, Lowell, Carl and Louie; and sisters, Garnet Workman, Ebel Price, Elsie Cook, Jenine Miller and Frankie Hicks.

Jewell is survived by her sons, Glenn and his wife, Sue, and Bob and his wife, Jonnie, both of Madison.  She has four grandchildren, Mary Nelson, Pam Blethen, Jennifer Eubanks and Eric Duty.  She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Madison Baptist Church, the Madison Order of the Eastern Star, and a graduate of Morris Harvey College (UC.) Jewell taught at Sharples High School for over 20 years and enjoyed playing golf, gardening and traveling throughout the world.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Handley Funeral Home in Danville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral with the Rev. Fred Duty officiating. Burial will follow at Boone Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank three special angels, Gaye Buckner, Nan Jarrell and Autumn Holestin who cared for Jewell so tenderly and also to the Hospice staff for their care and comfort.
