Marion, Ill. - James Howard Byassee, 94, went home to be with his Lord at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, in Fountains Nursing Home in Marion.

Howard was born July 7, 1915, on a farm near Bardwell, Ky., to Sarah Elizabeth (Vaughn) and James Henry Byassee.   He was “Bud” to his two sisters, Rosella Byassee Taylor and Yolonde Byassee Peterson.  

The family moved to Creal Springs circa 1920 for his mother’s health from benefits of the Creal Springs Mineral Water.   Howard graduated from Creal Springs School then Carbondale High School in Carbondale, where he was recruited to play basketball.   As a young man, he traveled town to town to demonstrate and sell Wearever cookware.

Howard married Imogene Lavender on Oct. 4, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and celebrated 68 years together.

Howard was a devoted husband, loving father, doting brother, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, loyal brother-in-law, faithful friend and humble servant.

During the early years of World War II, he was a steel worker, tying rods for Bethesda Hospital in Maryland and in Florida.   He also tied steel to build the Oak Ridge, Tenn. Nuclear Plant.   He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army while stationed in the Philippines.

In 1946 he joined his father as a Standard Oil Agent, then assumed ownership after his father’s death in 1947.   Howard delivered gasoline, heating oil and diesel to homes, farms and businesses in the Southern Illinois counties of Williamson, Johnson and Saline.   His kind-heartedness and generosity were well known by his customers - he made deliveries regardless of time of day, weather or lack of payment, so that little children would not go without heat.

Howard was involved in the communities of Creal Springs and later, Marion.   While residing in Creal Springs, he was a member of First Baptist Church, served on the Creel Springs School Board, and for a short time, he and his wife owned and operated a skating rink in Creal Springs.

In the early 60’s Howard, Imogene and their two sons, James Henry and Donald Eugene, moved to Marion, after purchasing the Marion Standard Oil Agency from Zeke Johnson.   Howard became a member of Marion’s First Baptist Church and attended faithfully until his health deteriorated.   Howard never served as deacon (although nominated many times) because he did not feel worthy.   Those that knew him know that there could be no doubt in his worth or his Christianity.

Howard retired from Byassee Oil Company in 1981, after 35 years of serving the public.

Howard was a sports enthusiast, holding season tickets for MHS basketball until his health failed.   He and Imogene were charter members of the Marion Cultural and Civic Center Foundation and patrons of MCCC for many years.   He cherished the accomplishments of his family: exhibiting faith in James by investing in his son’s dream for Byassee Keyboard Company; never missing a ballgame, concert, musical, pageant, church or school event for his sister, grandson or granddaughters.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Henry Byassee and wife Linda, and Donald Eugene Byassee, all of Marion.   Howard was the perfect grandfather to four grandchildren, Elizabeth Susan Byassee Shore and husband, Jeffrey Shore, Amanda Yolonde Byassee Gott and husband, Ashley Gott, all of Marion, Margaret Loraine Byassee Edmondson and husband, Shawn Edmondson of Lindale, Texas and grandson, Evan James Byassee, also of Marion.

His six great-grandchildren will miss “Grandpa Howard.”  They are James Benjamin Shore (9), Victoria Sylvania Shore (6), James Michael “Jamie” Gott (8), William Alexander “Alex” Gott (5), Jeremy Howard Gott (3) and Henry Joseph Edmondson (22 months).

Howard also leaves devoted sister and brother-in-law, Yolonde Peterson and Guy “Pete” Peterson of Maria.   Nephews remaining are Larry Lavender and family of Colorado, Kenny Lavender and family of St. Louis, David “Purp” Lavender and family of Murphysboro, Bill and Sandra Calvert of Texas and Don Samuel and family of Carterville.   Great nieces Cammy Duggins and family of San Domiano, Kara Beth Santi and family of Chicago and nephew, Kevin Cox of St. Louis also remain.   Cousins remaining are, Billy Byassee and family of Cordova, Tenn. and Annette Mix and Sue Gifford of Bardwell, Ky.   Howard leaves other extended family members and many friends.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister and brother-in-law, Rosella and Lewis Taylor of Creal Springs; and niece, Barbara Jane (Taylor) Cox of Marion.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, in Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with Dr. Bob Dickerson officiating.   Interment will be next to his wife, Imogene, in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion.   Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Marion or the Marion Cultural and Civic Center Foundation.   Military rites will be held at the cemetery by VFW Post 1301, American Legion Post 147 and the National Guard.

Imogene was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Marion, to Lottie Gertrude (Kindred) and Frank Almus Lavender, the youngest of 11 children.   Her mother passed away when she was five years old, and from that time on, her siblings and sister, Maggie, reared her. Sister Gladys helped shape Imogene’s fervent faith in God.   Over the years, Imogene continued to read her Bible every evening until the time of her illness.

She married James Howard Byassee of Creal Springs Oct. 4, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

She was a loving wife, homemaker, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law and friend.   She was one of the oldest members of the First Baptist Church of Marion, having grown up in the church, where she was an active member for many years, singing in the choir and a ladies trio.   For a few years, she and husband, Howard, owned a skating rink in downtown Creal Springs, where they raised their sons, James Henry and Donald Eugene.   Imogene worked with her husband at Byassee Oil Company in Creal Springs as book keeper and secretary, and continued to do so after moving to Marion in the 1960s.   Later, in 1977, Imogene helped son, James, by volunteering to work at Byassee Keyboard Company during the first years to help get the fledgling business started.   She and Howard enjoyed many friends from the First Baptist Church.   Imogene attended church regularly until she fell and broke her hip upon arrival at church two years ago.   She enjoyed occasional outings with her lady friends, which concluded with an afternoon of pinochle with the ladies’ group the day before suffering a major stroke on June 20.

Preceding Imogene in death are her parents and Lavender siblings, Almus Carl Lavender, Virgil Lavender, Lannis Herschel Lavender, William Frank Lavender, Leonard Lavender, Mabel Lavender, Helen Kee, Maggie Lee Calvert, Gladys Marie Samuel and a baby sister who died in infancy.

She is survived by her faithful husband of nearly 68 years, James Howard Byassee of Marion.   She leaves two sons and one daughter-in-law, James Henry Byassee and wife, Linda, as well as son, Donald Eugene Byassee, all of Marion.

She is loved by her four grandchildren, Elizabeth Susan Byassee Shore and husband, Jeffery Shore, Amanda Yolonde Byassee Gott and husband, Ashley Gott, all of Marion, Margaret Loraine Byassee Edmondson and husband, Shawn Edmondson, of Lindale, Texas and grandson, Evan James Byassee, also of Marion; her six great-grandchildren who have been praying for their “Grandma Imogene,” James Benjamin Shore (8), Victoria Sylvania Shore (5), James Michael “Jamie” Gott (7), William Alexander “Alex” Gott (4), and Jeremy Howard Gott (2), and Henry Joseph Edmondson (9 months), whom she cradled in her arms before she was air-lifted to St. Louis University Hospital for emergency treatment.

Jerry Dean Hurt, age 71, of Henderson, died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, August 8, 2004 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana.

Mr. Hurt was a member of By Faith General Baptist Church in Corydon.   He was retired from CSX Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Posey Bryan Hurt and Mary Edna Gill Hurt, one sister, Sharon Ann Samples and one brother, (W.B.) Wilbert Bryan Hurt.

Survivors include his wife of forty-four years, Glenda Samples Hurt, one son, Rev. J. Keith Hurt and his wife Melissa, one grandson, Joshua Hurt, all from Corydon, KY, one sister, Linda Welch of Henderson and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Jerry Dean Hurt will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Tapp Funeral Home.   The Rev. John Smith will officiate.

Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery in Henderson.   Military rites will be performed by American Legion Worsham Post #40.

Friends may call from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, and from 8:00 a.m. Wednesday until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contribution to By Faith GeneralBaptist Church, 1990 Wilson Station Rd., Corydon, KY 42406.

From obiturary in The Courier-Journal, published December 1, 2009, Louisville, Kentucky

Barbara May Houk, 82 of Louisville passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009 at the Hosparus Inpatient Unit.   She was the former Barbara Shehan, a native of Bardstown, KY and a member of Shively Christian Church.

Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley Moberly; sons, Tommy and Charles Wayne Houk; parents, Charles and Myrtle Shehan; brother, June Shehan; and sisters, Ruby Elder and Christine Kelly.

Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Houk; daughters, Connie M. Weddle (Bruce), of New Albany, IN and Mindy D. Crain (Ronnie); nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nunnelley Funeral Home, 4327 Taylor Blvd., with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West.   Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to her church.

BOONEVILLE - Elizabeth (Liz) Rambo, 82, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at the Landmark Nursing and Rehab Center in Booneville.   She was born July 19, 1922, in Prentiss County to the late George W. Rutherford Sr. and Mary Spain Rutherford Davis.   She retired from The People’s Bank & Trust Company.   She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Eastern Star, DAR, and past president of B&PW.   She was a 1941 graduate of Boonevile High School and loved shopping, sewing, music and playing bridge.

Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Lynn Jones officiating.   A private family graveside service followed in the Booneville Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, James E. Rambo Sr. and his wife, Mary Ann, of Oxford; two grandchildren, James E. (Bo) Rambo Jr. and Jennifer Leigh Rambo Davis; three nieces, Gloria Fraiser, Annette Richey and Elaine Breedlove; a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George W. Rutherford Jr.
Pallbearers were Sam Milton, Hubert McDaniels, Travis Childers, Billy Wary, J. Robert Floyd, Kent Geno, John Hatcher, Tim Fraiser, Mike Vernon, Tommy Fraiser and Rusty Fraiser.

JAMES EDWIN SMITH and Ruth Alline married Oct. 20. 1945.   They had one daughter, Julia (Judy) Ann born May 28, 1950.   They lived in the old Hopkins house at that time, next to Bellview Baptist Church in McCracken County.   They lived in the old house about eight years, then moved further out of Old Mayfield Road to a new home which he had built were they still live in the Sunny Slope Community

Judy married Freddie N. Cash on July 19, 1969, divorced March 1984.   They had two children: Christopher (Christ) Mich, born July 9, 1973; and Michelle Rene born Nov. 10, 1976.

Judy married Gregory (Greg) Jackson on Nov 22, 1986.   He was the son of Jane and Wallace Jackson, from Puryear, IN.   Greg has a son, Dylan Gregory Jackson, born May 12, 1986.

James Edwin was born May 11, 1913 on the Dunaway Farm, about halfway between Freemont Cross Roads and old 45 Highway.   The family moved from there before he was two years old.   They moved into a house built by his family, on his grandparents’ farm, for James’ family.   The house at the north edge of Graves County where his parents lived until their death.

James the oldest son of James Emett and Lucy Davidson Smith.   Emett and Lucy had four children.   James.   Solon married Charlotte Bass; they had one son Raymond Jerry.   Mildred married Eurede (E. M.) Stice (deceased); they didn’t have any children.   Rudy married Callie Kornegay; they had three children, Robert Wilson, Jimmy and Beverly Jane.

RAMBO, Roy Dee Rambo and Virginia Kathleen Whiteside were married in Paducah Oct. 19. 1948 by the Rev. T. J. Tichenor, pastor of the East Baptist Church.

Roy, born Oct. 5, 1919 is the first son of Irvin Rambo (1892-1957) and Bessie Wilson Rambo (1892 -1986), natives of Hickman Co., KY, who moved to the area of N. Graves County and So. McCracken County in the early 1920’s.   His paternal grand parents were John David Rambo (1856 -1894) and Alice Robinson Rambo Hughes (1872 - 1958) (she married Bennie Hughes after her first husband’s death.)

A detailed genealogy of the Rambo family dating back to Peter Gunnarson Rambo from Sweden can be found in the book, “The Rambo Family Tree, 1611-1986” by Beverly Nelson Rambo.   The book is in the Library of Congress at Washington, D.C. Roy served his country in the U.S. Army from April, 1941 to October, 1945, then returned home and has followed his favorite occupation of farming till retirement along with working for McCracken County (1954 - 1968).   Virginia graduated from Golconda, Pope County High School in 1942 and Draughon’s Buinesss College, in 1943 and worked for Franklin Finance Company (1943- 1949).   She also worked for McCracken County (1954 - 1966).   They attend Hardmoney Baptist Church.

They have four children, Karen Sue, Kenneth Roy, Kevin Earl, and Kristie Leah.

Virginia was born Feb. 28, 1925 and was the daughter of Joyce A. Whiteside (1901 - 1986) and Floe Burklow Whiteside Thomas, (1905 -   ).   She married Rev Willie Thomas (1899 - 1982) after she and Joyce were divorced.   Virginia’s paternal grandparents were Milo S. Whiteside (1867 - 1930) and Amilda Ann Rose Whiteside (1873 -1955), all natives of Pope Co. IL.   Her maternal grandparents were Henry Newton Burklow (1874 - 1963) born in Crittenden Co., KY and Ella Faulkner Burklow (1880 - 1970) born in Union County, IL.

A book of the James A. Whiteside Family (ab. 1760 - 1970) by Don Whitcside and Joyce A. BOAZ, Ky. - Virginia Kathleen Whiteside Rambo of Boaz died Friday, June 13, 2008, at Lourdes hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.   Virginia was the daughter of Joyce Atlas Whiteside and Floe Burklow Whiteside Thomas and stepdaughter of the Rev. Willie Thomas.   She was born February 28, 1925 in Eddyville, Illinois and move to Paducah when she was 17 to attend and graduate from Draughon’s Business College.   Virginia was married October 19, 1948 to Roy Dee Rambo, who preceded her in death on June 2, 2000.   She worked for Franklin Finance Company and with her husband, Roy, who was employed by the McCracken County Sanitarium at Paducah for 12 years.   She and Roy moved to Southern McCracken County in 1968, where she became a full-time farmer’s wife and homemaker.   Virginia had a passion for genealogy and spent many hours researching her family history.   She eventually had several books published that outlined her family lineage.

Virginia joined East Baptist Church in Paducah in 1946 and most recently was a member of Hardmoney Baptist Church in Boaz, Kentucky.   She also attended Highland Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Paducah.   She was precious and loving Mama, Granny, Sis and Aunt who loved her family above anything else here on this earth.   She sacrificed unselfishly for her loved ones and tirelessly gave of her time for those who meant the world to her.

Virginia is survived by daughter Karen Walters and husband Larry of Symsonia; son Kevin Rambo and wife Phyllis of Paducah; daughter Kristie Rambo of Boaz; daughter-in-law Cheryl Rambo of Boaz; granddaughter Deanna Reynolds and husband Mike of Boaz; granddaughter Melissa Kilgore and husband Jesse of Boaz; step-granddaughter Amanda Dycus of Paducah; great-grandson Ethan Reynolds of Boaz; and step-great-grandson Dayton Kilgore of Boaz.   Virginia also leaves behind a brother Dorris Thomas and wife Sharon of Brownfield, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Vida Burnett of Paducah and Oneta Richards of Kevil; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Roy, Virginia was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Rambo; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Smith and Roberta Richards and a brother-in-law, James Rambo.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and will be especially missed by Betsy “Little Bit”, her beloved Beagle.

Funeral services honoring Virginia and celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Lone Oak with the Rev. Terry Vasseur officiating.   Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may visit with the family on Monday, June 16, 2008, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
