Farmington Public Library -1908 Obituary

MR DALTON PASSES AWAY

SUCCUMBS AFTER AN HEROIC STRUGGLE OF WEEKS.

Thos. T. Dalton Yields Early Tuesday Morning after an Heroic Struggle of Several Weeks - the city Loses a Valued Citizen.

The death of Thos. T. Dalton at .6:50 o’clock Tuesday morning. Although not unexpected was nevertheless a serious blow to this community.  He had been in critical condition for many weeks and the expressions of anxiety for him were many and constant in the community.  About four weeks ago it was found that an abscess had formed in the bony tissue just back of the left ear and that an operation must be performed.  This was apparently a success and for about two weeks there was much hope for his ultimate and complete recovery, but blood poisoning set up and began to manifest itself in other abscesses, forming on various parts of his body, and thus remaining energy was gradually consumed.

Mr. Dalton was 68 years, 3 months and 12 days old and had been a citizen of St. François County for 65 years and of Farmington for over 40 years.  Soon after coming to Farmington he engaged in the mercantile business with his brother-in-law, Thos. B. Marks, and the firm of Dalton & Marks was for more than a quarter of a century the leading mercantile establishment in this section.  They retired from active mercantile business about ten years ago.  Mr. Dalton was also for many years the leading real estate dealers in this section and in addition, with his good wife, was proprietor for many years of the Dalton Hotel, a favorite stopping place for some of the best known traveling men of this section.

Mr. Dalton had wonderful energy and was scrupulously honest and honorable in all his dealings with his fellow man.  By close application of his business and with his sterling integrity, which made him a county wide reputation for fair dealing, he was enabled to prosper far beyond the average in this world’s goods.

Though a member of the M. E. church for only about two years, he was for more than a quarter of a century an honored and influential member of the board of trustees here and always took a lively interest in the welfare of the church and Carleton college and was diligent in the service of both.

He was for many years a leader in political affairs, a staunch Republican and was elected Public Administrator at the election two years ago.  An office which he filled with his characteristic ability and fidelity to ?????

Mr. Dalton married Emma Marks, daughter of Mr. George Marks, in February 1862, with their only child, Miss Mary A Dalton still survive him and who gather with brothers, Wm and James Dalton, and other relatives which he leaves, have the sympathy of the News a depressed community.

Farmington Public Library - 1888 Biography

Thomas B. Marks, merchant of Farmington and member of the firm of Dalton & Marks, was born in St. Francois County, Mo., in 1837, and is the son George and Mary (McFarland) Marks.  The father was a native of Nelson County, Ky., where he grew to manhood.  About 1811 he started for Missouri on horseback, and at last came to St. Francois County, where be bought what was then called a “tomahawk” right to land in Liberty Township.  These rights were acquired by a man cutting the initials of his name on a tree with a hatchet.  He remained in this county and worked on his place until the fall of 1813, when be went hack to Kentucky.  He did not stay long, but returned, and in the summer following he worked on his pre-emption and also worked at the sawmill business, making enough money at the same to enable him to enter forty acres more of land.  In the spring of 1814 he again returned to Kentucky but returned the same year, bringing with him his mother.  He followed out his plan of working on his place in the summer and in the mill in the winter three years.  The first year he lived on his claim he put up a round pole cabin, and after his mother’s arrival they moved into the same.  A year or two after this he married Miss Mary McFarland, a native of Buncombe County, N. C., and the daughter of Reuben and Martha McFarland, who moved from North Carolina to Tennessee and came from there to Missouri in 1814, locating in Liberty Township, St. Francois County, where they passed the remainder of their days.  Mr. McFarland was a remarkable man.  He was a natural mechanic being a good blacksmith, gunsmith, carpenter, cabinet maker, etc., and used tools of his own making.  He was also a man who made friends of every one with whom he came in contact.  He made a clock that kept perfect time, and the violins of his making were equal to any purchased from dealers.  Within two or three years after his marriage Mr. Marks put up a substantial log house, and hewed it down from the outside.  This house is still standing on the farm of his son, Jesse Marks.  In 1840 he erected another large log house, a story and a half high, 20x36, and with a large old fashioned brick chimney at each end, which is still standing on the old homestead.  He lived in this house until his death which occurred October, 1865.  His record was certainly a remarkable one as he was obliged to start out in life with no means, and when be set foot in Missouri all he possessed was the animal that had carried him thither.  His father was unable to assist him, as he had gone the security of parties to the amount of $9,000, which he had to pay.  While Mr. Marks received no assistance from his father he continued to prosper and soon became the owner of an extensive tract of land.  Although game was plentiful he did very little hunting, except sometimes when he would go out before breakfast and kill a deer.  He was an old line Whig in his political proclivities and afterward a Republican.  His wife was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and her death occurred in 1870.  They were kind and hospitab1e people.  Both are buried on the old home farm.  Thomas B. Marks is the seventh of a. family of eight children.  He attained his growth on the farm, followed agricu1tural pursuits until 1865, when he and his brother-in-law, Thomas T. Dalton, began merchandising in Farmington, and have continued the same up to the present, being among the oldest merchants in the city.  In October, 1872, Mr. Marks married Miss Catherine A. Evans, daughter of David Evans.  Mrs. Marks was born in St. Francois County in 1839, and to her marriage was born one child, Katie.  Mr. Marks, like his father, is a Republican in his political views and an honest. upright citizen.

Farmington Public Library -1901 Obituary (died March 20, 1901)

Died Suddenly

Mr. Thomas B. Marks dropped dead from heart trouble in his store shortly after seven o’clock last Wednesday evening, 11-1901.  Truly the old familiar figures are passing away. One by one death is claiming them.  Mr. Marks was born in this county and had spent his sixty- four years here, having been born in 1831.  He has been in business in Farmington continuously for thirty-six years of that time.  On the evening of his death Mr. Marks was seemingly feeling as well as usual.  After supper he went into the store.  Where he sat talking with friends for possibly half an hour, when he suddenly fell forward without any warning.  His friend’s caught him, but he died before the hastily summoned physician could arrive.

Funeral services were conducted from the residence to the Masonic cemetery Friday afternoon and the mortal remains were laid to rest.

The deceased leaves a daughter, Miss Kate, one sister, Mrs. T. T. Dalton, and three brothers, to mourn his loss, and to these the deepest sympathy of the entire community is extended.
