Mark Marks,  Enterprise,  1916-2002

Mark Benjamin Marks, 85, of Enterprise died June 3 at Wallowa Memorial Hospital.   A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Enterprise Community Church.   Bollman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Marks was born Sept. 30, 1916, to Clement and Ethel Thompson Marks in Freezeout Canyon on the Imnaha, where his grandparents, Benjamin and Elizabeth Marks, had homesteaded in 1889.   He attended school at Joseph and Imnaha and worked on ranches in the Imnaha and Snake River country.

He married Adelyne M. Sanders on Nov. 24, 1939, in Enterprise.

He served in the Army during World War II and served as chief of the Enterprise Police Department from 1953 to 1955, when he was appointed sheriff of Wallowa County to fill out the term of Clarence Booth.   He continued as sheriff until he retired in 1971.

For many years he drove the Chico mail run.

Mr. Marks spent his days off working with horses, including at the sales yard on auction days.   He was grand marshal for Chief Joseph Days and helped to form the Wallowa County Wranglers, a precision drill team that performed at local rodeos.   He was a longtime member of the Alpine Meadows Golf Club and spent winters in Arizona to play year round.   He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion and the Oregon Sheriffs’ Association.

Survivors include his wife of Enterprise; a son, Dan Marks of Reno; a daughter and son-in-law, Elle Mae and Mike Hays of Grant’s Pass; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a sister, Mabel Wisener of Grangeville, Idaho.   A son, Sam Marks, died in 1966.

Memorials may be made to the Wallowa Valley Health Care Foundation in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise, 97828.

Alice ‘Billie’ Marks,
June 14, 1917 - June 26, 2008

Alice "Billie" Marks, 91, of Hermiston, the first president of the Wheeler County Cattlewomen, died Thursday, June 26, 2008, in Jesup, Ga.

Her memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 485 W. Locust St., in Hermiston.

Mrs. Marks was born June 14, 1917, in Pomeroy, Wash., to William D. and Ida M. Hamilton.   She graduated from Oregon State University in 1941.

She married Leslie Marks in 1942 in Corvallis.   The couple moved to Wheeler County, living in Fossil for 22 years.   In addition to being a member of the Wheeler County Cattlewomen, she also was a 4-H leader for 16 years.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, the Women’s Society of Christian Service, the OSU Mom’s Club, and was a local Republican precinct committeewoman.   She enjoyed bridge and held a bridge master designation.

Mrs. Marks is survived by son David H. Marks of Hermiston; daughter Margaret A. Morphet of Jesup, Ga.; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ida Hamilton, and husband Leslie Marks.
