[or-roots] Clark surname

Marilyn or-roots@sosinet.sos.state.or.us

I have a Clark connection in early Oregon.  Elizabeth Marks, b. 1842 in Missouri, the sister of my G-grandfather James P. Marks, married William S. Clark Jan. 10, 1861 in Linn County, OR.  William S. Clark was born about 1838 in Missouri.

The Marks family arrived in Oregon in 1853.

Any connection to the Clarks being discussed lately?

Subject: [or-roots] Oregon Pioneer Certificates -- what documentation?

Barb,

Thanks for the information on the certificates. Does anyone know what proof is required? I can come up with some documentation that my GG-grandparents came to Oregon in the 1850s (DLCs), but so far I've come up with no documentation of my grandfather's birth.

As far as we can ascertain, my grandfather, George Alfred Marks, was born October 12, 1874, "in the Willamette Valley."   His parents were James P. Marks and Charity Ann (Noble) Marks. Charity died in 1875. The Marks and Noble clans were in transition at that time, moving from Sweet Home area to Prineville area (Marks Creek).

I can't locate this Marks family on any censuses. George's father James P. remarried, a Margaret Hedgpeth, around 1878, and the family moved to Wyoming around 1880, then to Montana. I can't find them on the 1880 census in either state, I understand the 1890 census was destroyed, then George's father and stepmother were dead before the 1900 census. George doesn't show up there either, and he died in 1906. Hmm, I know he existed!

Without a birth certificate or family Bible or something proving my grandfather's parentage, would I be eligible for the Pioneer Certificate? As far as that goes, there's no birth certificate for my father. He was born in Rosebud, Montana in 1906 and I guess there was a fire where certificates were lost. He had a dickens of a time getting social security as I recall.

What kind of proof do I need to come up with?

Thanks.

Marilyn Schwartz

Marilyn,

Although you said "I can't locate this Marks family on any censuses." I'm not sure how hard you looked, because I found them all very easily in 1860, 1870, 1900, 1910, & 1920. I did not check other years.

It looks to me like the Marks clan moved across the mountains sooner than you thought, they are already in the Prineville area by the 1870 census. James P. Marks is found there with his parents and several other family members. Wasco County, East of Deschutes River Precinct, page 10, family number 90, on NARA roll 1288. It appears the family migrated from Kentucky by way of Indiana and Missouri.

Charity is found in 1870 with her parents and family in Linn County, Sand Ridge Precinct, page 19, family number 126, on NARA roll 1286.

Margaret Hedgpeth may be the girl found with her parents and family in Polk County, page 7, family number 55, on NARA roll 1287. It appears that James liked his girlfriends/wives on the young side. In 1870 he was 24, Charity was 15, Margaret 12 (making both teenage brides).

Going back to 1860, we find James with his parents and family in Linn County, p. 87, family number 598, on roll 1055. Charity (as Ann) is with her parents and family in Linn County, p. 71, family number 491, on roll 1055.

Moving forward to 1900, we find George A. Marks right where you mentioned (Rosebud MT area). Both parents must have just died, he is single and taking care of 3 younger sisters (b. in OR & WY) and a younger brother, an infant b. in MT. George was enumerated as being born in OR in Oct. 1875. This family is found in Custer County MT, ED 206, sh. 4B, family 107, roll 910.

In 1910, we find George's widow Edith M. (remarried abt. 1907 to Robert B. Chadwick) and 3 Marks children (Dorothy I., b. 1901 WY, George Allen, b. abt 1904 MT, & Maurice R., b. abt 1906 MT) as well as a Chadwick baby. The family is in Rosebud County MT, ED 213, sh. 4A, family 51, roll 835.

In 1920 we find Edith the mother has yet another husband (Frank W. Davis), and still has the same 3 Marks children, the Chadwick child, and a Davis baby. The family is in Rosebud County MT, ED 118, sh. 3A, family 67, roll 975.

While I did not check 1880 I can just about promise you that you will find them in Wasco County, Oregon. I hope this was helpful, good luck in your future research.

Kevin,

Thanks again for the census lookups for the Marks families. Do you have a CD with all this info on it? How do you look it up so quickly? I don't know all the ins and outs of genealogy yet. I haven't been a really serious "genealogist," but mainly I just have been trying to find out who my family was because we knew so little until we started this search 3-4 years ago.

My grandfather, George Alfred Marks, was born, as I said earlier, "in the Willamette Valley" of Oregon. But, the family moved on to eastern Oregon then Wyoming/Montana when he was a child. Grandfather George Marks died at age 30 or 31, in 1906, on the day my father Maurice was born. George's widow, Edith, remarried twice, as you noted from your census lookups. Mr. Marks left her with an apparently profitable horse ranch in Montana, but her second husband, Mr. Chadwick, was a scoundrel who sold her property out from under her and ran off with another woman, leaving her destitute with 4 children. Her third husband, Mr. Davis, was a good man, but they struggled to support the continually growing family. They moved to Washington, the children all took the Davis name, and I believe at that time all contact with the Marks family was lost. Contact with the Noble family in Oregon had probably been lost years earlier when George was only a year old and his mother, Charity Noble Marks, died in 1875. Mr. Davis also died young, and there wasn't much family history passed down.

Thanks again.

Marilyn Schwartz
