Mrs. Goldie Mae Abell, 92, of Durham, Mo., died Saturday, November 29, 2003, at Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown, Mo.

Born September, 29, 1911, in Coatsburg, Ill., the daughter of William Jesse Wheeler and Mary Franks Wheeler.  She married Steve James Abell on September 25, 1929, in Durham.  He died May 13 1963.  Mrs. Abell was a member of the Durham Baptist Church and the Baptist Women on Missions.  She worked in the church nursery for years and after her retirement enjoyed making quilts for her family.  Mrs. Abell worked at J.H. Miller and the Paper Box in Quincy over a period from 1948 to 1973.  She was also a homemaker.  Mrs. Abell was a graduate of Durham High School.

Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Roy (Hazel) Smyser, Lewistown, Mo., Mrs. Duane (Betty) Perrine, Maywood, Mo.; Mrs. Donald (Joan) Powers, Mrs. John (Marcie) Bock, Mrs. George (Linda) Whitaker, and Mrs. Michael (Trudy) Hicks, all of Durham;  a daughter-in-law, Ann Abell, Newark, Mo.;  three sons, Steve Abell and his wife, Bonnie, Ewing, Mo., Bobby Abell and his wife Janice, and Jackie Abell and his wife Julie, all of Quincy.  Other survivors include two brothers, Otis Wheeler, Anchorage, Alas., and Burrell Wheeler, Lynn Center, Ill;  29 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, 21 great great grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren;  several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Steve James Abell 65, who was stricken Monday about noon at the Emerson Jones farm and died at 4:15 p.m. in Blessing hospital were held Thursday at 2 p.m. standard time in the Durham Baptist church.  Rev. Virgil Graves and Rev. Howard James officiated.  Songs were by Mrs. Russell Johnson, Billy and Connie Johnson and J. W. Shackleford accompanied by Mrs. Alney Carter.  Burial was in the Durham cemetery.  Pall bearers were Wade Shanks, Chester Hicks, Gene Riney, George Turner, Earl Hinch and George Carr.  Honorary Pallbearers were Reuben Smyser, Russell Johnson, George Chance, Dan O'Brien, Clarence O'Brien, Orville Carter, Walter Rathbun and Orville Carroll.

Mr. Abell was born near Durham November 20, 1897, a son of John S. and Edna Johnson Abell.  He was a member of the Durham Baptist church and attended the Durham School.  He was married September 25, 1929, to Goldia Wheeler who survives.

Surviving with the widow are four sons, Steve, Jr., of Taylor, Bobby of Maywood, Joe Lee of Ewing and Jackie at home; six daughters, Mrs. Elmo (Hazel) Smyser and Mrs. Duane (Betty) Perrine, both of Durham, Mrs. Donald (Joan) Powers of Warsaw, Ill., Marcia, Linda and Trudy all at home; four brothers, George and Jerry, of Island City, Ore., Ingman of Lewistown and Johnnie of Byl, Oregon; four sisters, Mrs. Ursa Knapp of Portland, Oreg., Mrs. Lydia Kirkham of Indiana, Mrs. Lottie Balsar of Durham and Miss Dolly of Quincy, Ill., and 14 grandchildren.  Three children preceded him in death.

Burrell Acquilla Wheeler, 94, of Lynn Center, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009 at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Geneseo, IL.

Services were held at Swedona Lutheran Church.  Burial was in Swedona Lutheran Cemetery.

Burrell was born July 12, 1914 in Durham, Missouri, to William Jessie Theodore and Mary Ann (Franks) Wheeler.  He graduated from Durham High School and was the valedictorian of his class.  He hitchhiked to Illinois in 1936 during the depression to find work.  He married Arline Elizabeth Seabloom Feb.5, 1944.  They were married for 58 years until Arline's death on Feb. 14, 2002.

Burrell was a lifetime farmer.  He and Arline bought their farm in 1951.  He worked for a time at Admiral in Galesburg.  He retired from farming in 1981.  Burrell's memberships included Swedona Lutheran Church where he was a member for 64 years, Edwards River Coon Hunter's Club, Swedona Church Men's Club, Farm Bureau, National Farmers Organization, Hardly Able Fishing Club and several 500-card clubs.

He and Arline loved blue grass music, traveled extensively to many blue grass festivals, traveled throughout the United States and enjoyed camping.  Most of all he enjoyed family and friends.  He was a great dad, grandpa and friend and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Survivors (and spouses) include his son, Michael (Mary) Wheeler, Coal Valley; daughters, Carol (Jeffrey) Andree, Kissimmee, Fla., and Becky (Chick) Pettifer, Coal Valley; 10 grandchildren, Kent (Melanie) Wheeler, Robert Wheeler and friend, Dorrine, Karla (Bill) Pitzen, Candace (Mike) Hebert, Jacqueline (Paul) Modlin, Debra Andree (Matt Snell), Adam (Paula) Pettifer, Aaron (Amy) Pettifer, Jessie (Terry) Lecander and Alex Pettifer; 16 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  His surviving in-laws include John Seabloom, Arland (Marilyn) Seabloom, Elaine (Stan) Sward, Janet Larson, Ted (Liz) Seabloom and Ruth (Bill) Vermost.

He was preceded in death by his wife; mother and father; mother and father-in-law, Arland and Martha Seabloom; siblings (and spouses), Goldie (Steven) Abell, Otis (Virginia) Wheeler, Iona (Ray) Holzgrafe; and in-laws, Kathryn (Harold) Underwood, Genevieve (Ken) Swanson, Patricia Seabloom and Donald Larson.

OBITUARY:

Frank J. Evans, 83, a longtime Camp Point farmer, died at 9:43 a.m. Thursday in Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Born in Coatsburg,he was the son of Henry and Edith Henning Evans.  He married Virginia Wensing in September 1955 in Streator.  She died October 18,1978.  They had 1 child.

He married Irene Goertz Wharton Kindhart on August 14, 1983, she survives.

Mr. Evans farmed in the Camp Point area for many years.  He had attended Brushy School north of Coatsburg and the Coatsburg Grade School, and was a member of the Camp Point United Methodist Church and the Adams County Farm Bureau.

Survivors also include a son, Gary Evans of Camp Point;  three step-sons, Ivan Wharton of Camp Point, Robert Wharton of Vermont, IL and Jim Kindhart of Iowa City, Iowa;  a step-daughter, Mrs Don (Mary) Smith of Mesa, AZ;  a sister, Mrs. Willis (Myra) Johnson of Camp Point;  two grandchildren, Matthew & Bryant Evans, both of Camp point;  10 step-grandchildren;  and 6 step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Evans was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl & Chester; and two sisters, Reva Heins and Marian Kunzeman.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, 1994 in the Lummis-Hamilton Funeral Home in Camp Point by the Rev. Randall Robinson and the Rev. Donald Busboom.  Burial was in Quincy Memorial Park.

URSA, Ill. -- Emma Myrl Evans, 94, of Pulaski, Tenn., formerly of Ursa died Tuesday evening (March 11, 2008) in National HealthCare in Pulaski.  She was born on May 9, 1913, in Big Neck, a daughter of the late Noah and Mabel Henning Foltz.  She married Arnold Evans on May 18, 1935, in Mendon.  He died on March 19, 1986.  Mrs. Evans was a homemaker for the majority of her life, assisting her husband on their family farm.  In her earlier years she taught school in the Big Neck area.  She enjoyed gardening, reading, volunteering for various activities at the North Adams Home in Mendon and just liked to be outdoors.

She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte (Albert) Hughes of Pulaski; a brother, Arthur Foltz of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and William Foltz; and a sister, Bessie Foltz.

FUNERAL SERVICES: 1 p.m. Saturday in Mendon Congregational Church in Mendon [Illinois] with the Rev. Jack Perdue officiating.  Burial will follow in Mendon Cemetery.  VISITATION: 11 a.m. until time of services Saturday in the church.  MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to Mendon Congregational Church in Mendon or to Martin Methodist College Choir in Pulaski, Tenn.

Career:

Sept 1941 - 30 June 1972 - Ordnance Engineer for the US Navy Bureau of Ordnance/Naval Ordnance Systems Command working on the design of guns, rocket launchers and depth charge projectors to meet Navy requirements.   He had the responsibility of developing the first automatically operated, remote controlled rocket launcher receiving on 7 Dec 1945 the Meritorious Civilian Service Award.   May 1966 became the Executive Director Surface Warfare systems of the new Naval Ordnance Systems Command.   He was appointed to the Steering Committee of the First Naval Gunnery Conclave, to the Tri-Service Reliability working Group, and the U.S. representative with the NATO Naval Armament Group.   On 21 June 1972 he was awarded the Naval Ordnance Systems Command Achievement Recognition Medallion.   On 30 June 1972 he was given the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award.   Retired with 31 years of Federal Service.
