W. H. Dodson, foundry, mill and plow factory.  W. H. Dodson was born in Halifax County, Va., June 8, 1815, the second son of Wm. T. and Sallie (Young) Dodson, both Virginians by birth.  His father was a farmer and mechanic; was married in Virginia, in 1811, and came with his family to Davidson County, Tenn., in 1823; died in 1832, preceded by his wife several years, Of the nine children five lived to be grown.  W. H. Dodson was brought to Tennessee when about eight years of age.  He attended school only about six weeks after he attained a youthful age; however, by his own efforts, he acquired a very good practical education.  At the age of fifteen he was thrown upon his own resources for obtaining a living, and began work on the river, working on a keel, flat and steam-boat.  In 1836 he steered a flat-boat from Nashville to New Orleans, continuing to follow boating for several years, on the Tennessee, Cumberland, Forked Deer, Yellow Bushy, Yazoo, Tallahatchie and Big Black Rivers.  By his frugality he saved some money, and began trading in stock and poultry from Nashville to New Orleans.  In 1841 he moved from Nashville to West Tennessee, and settled in Eaton, Gibson County, becoming engaged in the family grocery business, boating on Forked Deer River, and trading to New Orleans.  In 1846 he associated himself with James A. Harwood, adding dry goods to their present business, and continued this business of general trade with him for three years, at the close of which time he sold out to Mr. Harwood.  He then engaged in farming, saw-mill and stock business, continuing in this to the breaking out of the war.  After this he returned to Eaton, and again resumed the dry goods business and general store, in company with his son-in-law, I. R. Dance, continuing in this business two years, at the close of which time, Mr. Dance retiring, T. C. Patterson was taken in as partner.  The firm Dodson & Patterson remained until 1870.  The former then sold out to Patterson & Bros., and moved to Trenton in 1871.  In 1872, moving to Humboldt, he then bought a half interest of the plow factory and foundry of William Jarrell, at the same place, the latter gentleman being the inventor of the celebrated Jarrell plow, cotton scraper and planter known throughout the South and West, the same year adding a flouring-mill to the other business.  He remained in business with Mr. Jarrell until 1878, at the close of which time Mr. Dodson bought the entire stock, and has continued in the same business, adding, at different times, new and improved machinery.  Mr. Wm. Jarrell, having recently returned to Humboldt, has obtained a patent for a cotton cleaner and condenser, in which Mr. Dodson is interested, and is now engaged in the manufacture of the same, at Humboldt, Tenn.  Mr. Dodson is a Democrat and Mason.  On January 9, 1843, he married Sarah T. Morton, who died August 16, same year.  June 17, 1847, he wedded J. A, Blakemore, daughter of W. T. and Jane R. Blakemore, and of ten children born to them five are living: W. W., Ida (Mrs. W. H. Gregory), C. J., A. R. and L. P. Dodson.

In May, 1897, Mr. Dodson made a visit to his old home in Brooklyn, Halifax County, Va., returning after an absence of seventy-five years; but he could find no one living in the little village who was as old as he, or could tell him anything about the village of his boyhood days, and there was nothing left by which he could trace where the "old home" used to stand.

On June 17, 1897, Mr. and Mrs. Dodson celebrated their fiftieth anniversary, or golden wedding, on which occasion their children, grandchildren, and quite a number of their old friends were present.

On August 8, 1898, death came to the once happy home and took from it his lifelong companion and dearly beloved wife.  Mr. Dodson was a man of strong constitution and enjoyed exceptionally good health until after the death of his wife, when his health began to fail.  He died on February 2, 1901, rich and ripe in many graces.

Mr. Dodson was a Democrat and a Mason, and he and his wife were for many years very active and devoted members of the Missionary Baptist Church, the former being senior deacon of the church at Humboldt, Tenn., at the time of his death.  He was liberal with his means and always willing to help those in distress, and never turned away any who asked him for help without giving.  In business affairs he was always willing to help those who were worthy and striving to help themselves.  He commenced life without a penny, and yet by honest and hard work accumulated quite a fortune.  He assisted very largely with his means in building the handsome First Baptist Church at this place in 1897, and also the beautiful parsonage erected in the fall of 1900, and was a liberal contributor to all the calls of his church.

A. R. Dodson, cashier of the Merchants' State Bank of Humboldt, was born in Gibson County in 1865, and came with his parents to Humboldt in 1872.  He is a graduate of the Southwestern Baptist University, at Jackson, Tenn., receiving the B.A. degree in that institution.  He completed his business course at Eastman's Business College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in October, 1886, in his twenty-first year.

He was elected cashier of the Farmers and Merchants' Bank of Humboldt, and when that bank consolidated with the Tennessee State Bank, forming the Merchants' State Bank, he was elected cashier of the latter, which position he has filled down to the present time.  Mr. Dodson's business career has been spent entirely in Humboldt, although offered many tempting inducements elsewhere in the banking business.  Having been associated with Mr. C. An 1886 Biography from Goodspeed's "History of Tennessee"

--------------------------

W. B. Blakemore, liveryman of Martin, Tenn., was born in Dresden, Weakley County, in 1849, and is one of eleven children, five of whom are living, born to W. B. and C. V. Blakemore.  The father was born in North Carolina in 1802, and when a child removed with his parents to Tennessee, and located in Davidson County, where he remained until 1828, and the following to years was a resident of Gibson County.

From that time until his death, in 1875, he farmed in Weakley County.  The mother was born in North Carolina in 1812, and departed this life in 1872.

Our subject was educated at Dresden Academy, and 1877 witnessed the celebration of his marriage with Rebecca Scott, daughter of W. S. and Sara Scott.  Mrs. Blakemore was born in Weakley County in 1852, and died in 1880, leaving her husband and one daughter, Pearl, to mourn her loss.  Mr. Blakemore was a tanner up to 1877, and from the date up to 1880 tilled the soil.  He then moved to Martin, and in 1883 engaged in his present business, in partnership with W. J. Burchard.  The latter retired from the business after a short time and our subject has since continued alone.  He has a large, commodious barn, a fine and complete stock of buggies, and a good lot of horse.  Florence Pierce, of Columbus, Ky., became his wife in 1883.  She was born in 1862, a daughter of Dr. Pierce.  Mr. Blakemore, in connection with his stable, looks after the interest of his farm, which is located near Martin.  He is a democrat and belongs to the Masonic order.

Dresden Enterprise, Dresden, Weakley Co., TN,  Oct 23, 1903:

  Horrible Fate

News reached here Tuesday afternoon that Wiley, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. BLAKEMORE, of Martin, had been ground to pieces beneath the wheels of a moving freight train at about 4 o'clock that afternoon.  The accident occurred at the lower crossing in Martin, opposite Mr. BLAKEMORE's tobacco factory.  The local freight from the south was pulling in on the siding at a slow rate of speed and Wiley and two companions were alongside the track.  As the train was passing them, Wiley remarked to his friends that he believed he would ride it; but his foot slipped and the great cruel wheels came down on him, severing his left foot just above the ankle and running over the other leg just below and above the knee.

He was removed to Dr. McKEY's office, over the Ease Side drug store, where Drs. McKEY, SEBASTIAN, GOURLEY, and CASHON and others amputated both limbs.  The little fellow lingered till ten past twelve o'clock that night when death relieved his terrible suffering.  All that surgical and medical skill could do was resorted to to save his life, but to no avail.  The funeral was held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon and interment took place at East Side cemetery.  Wiley was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. BLAKEMORE, and, being a bright, obedient child, was idolized by them.  He was in his fifteenth year.

    1. CHANEY SUTTLE (BLAKEMORE) PRICE was named after two aunts, one of them was CHANEY HAMBLEN her Great Aunt on the half blood.   CHANEY HAMBLEN was the daughter of HENRY HAMBLEN (1740 - 1815) and his first wife JUDITH WATKINS (died 1762/69).
    2. CHANEY SUTTLE (BLAKEMORE) PRICE grew up and was married in the area exactly in the middle of a line drawn from Nashville to Fayetteville, Tennessee.
    3. CHANEY SUTTLE (BLAKEMORE) PRICE visited her son THOMAS RUBIN PRICE in Illinois in the year 1901 and in her own handwriting left a series of small notes detailing the history of her family, and giving full names and dates of birth, marriage, and death.   Of special note is the fact that she spelled her middle name “SUBTLE” and not as “SUTTLE” as shown on the death certificate of this same son, THOMAS RUBIN PRICE, who was killed in an accident in the city of Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, on 4 Sept 1923.  Which spelling is correct is not now known.  These small family history notes written in 1901 are now (1986) in the possession of: ELAINE VIRGINIA (PRICE) NELSON [now deceased] or her daughter MARY ANN NELSON.
