CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENT OF VIRGINIA; Vol 2, p. 112 by Lyman Chalkley

Chalkley refers to a suit that began in Lee County, Virginia and was of record in Augusta County, Virginia as having some indication that she had illegally married Henry Hamblen.  Chalkley II 112.  On August 17, 1790, she was killed by Indians at or near Fort Blackmore, Scott County, Virginia.

Blackmore vs. Adams--O. S. 110; N. S. 38--Bill in Lee County, 1806.  Orators are Jonathan and Sarah Adams.  Joseph Blakemore, grandfather of Jonathan and Sarah (father of their mother, Molly Adams), gave Molly a negro.  Their father, Adams, was killed by Indians.  Afterwards Molly was married (but illegally) to Henry Hamlin.  Molly had brothers, Joseph and Wm. Blakemore, and sisters Hannah and Susan.  Molly had a daughter, Cynthea Chadwell, half-sister to orators.  Hannah above became Hannah Bird.

Jesse and ten of the children in the Adams household were killed by Indians in 1782.  Only Mary, Jonathan, and Sarah Jane survived.

From the unpublished manuscript, Indian Atrocities Along the Clinch, Powell and Holston Rivers, page 114.

Arthur Campbell wrote to the Governor of Virginia, on September 20, 1782, (1) saying:

Jessee Adams and his family of 12 children, except two, were killed at the head of Stock Creek.

The details of how Adams and his family were killed have not been found, and none of the military correspondence of the day makes any mention of this tragedy, other than the brief mention by Arthur Campbell.  The two Adams children who escaped were named Jonathan and Sally Adams.  Their mother, Mary Adams, was a daughter of Joseph Blackmore.  She later married Henry Hamlin, and was herself killed at Blackmore’s Fort in 1790.  She had a daughter Cynthia Chadwell, probably by a former marriage.  Just how the mother, Cynthia Chadwell, Jonathan, and Sally Adams escaped being murdered is unknown.

  (8)  HENRY HAMBLEN (1740-1815) married, as his 2nd wife, MARY "POLLY" DICKENSON (DICKINSON, DICKERSON) about 1769/70 and she was scalped and killed by the Indians after 2 Jan 1783 and before Oct 1784, and not on the 7th or 17th of Aug 1790, as reported in many publications, as the date was probably the date of the death of his third wife, MRS. MARY "MOLLY" (BLAKEMORE) ADAMS, who was the widow of JESSE ADAMS.  Other accounts have also reported in many publications, that all of the children of the second wife, MARY "POLLY" DICKENSON (etc.) were also killed at the time she was scalped and killed by the Indians.  This is not true, because her five known children, FRANCES (a daughter), FRANCIS (a son), CHARLES, CHAMP, and JOHN HAMBLEN, all became adults and left descendents.

See: History of Southwest Virginia, 1746-1786, Washington County 1777-1780, by Lewis Preston Summers (Baltimore 1971 -originally published in Richmond, Virginia, in 1903); on pages 365 and 367 is the incorrect report that all of the children of MRS MARY "POLLY" (DICKENSON, DICKINSON, DICKERSON) HAMBLEN were killed at the time she was killed.  Also, on page 367, it is reported that in 1776  HENRY HAMBLIN (1740-1815), one of the first settlers at CASTLE'S WOODS erected FORT HAMBLIN and HAMBLIN'S MILL on the Holston River with the assistance of HENRY DICKINSON, CHARLES BICKLEY, WILLIAM ROBERTSON, WILLIAM RUSSEL, PATRICK PORTER, HENRY NEECE, WILLIAM WHARTON, HUMPHREY DICKINSON, FREDERICK FRYLEY, JAMES BUSCH, ARCHELAS DICKINSON, SAMUEL RICHIE, JERRY HARROLD, RICHARD and WILLIAM LONG and WILLIAM BOWLIN, also first settlers in that section.

THE FIRST MILITIA ROSTER OF THE CLINCH RIVER AREA OF RUSSELL COUNTY  - By Emory L. Hamilton - 1978:

6.  HENRY HAMLIN - Henry Hamlin came to Castlewood and settled in upper Castlewood, on the North side of Clinch River in 1769.  He operated a mill there long before Bickley's Mill and the old foundation still stands on Mill Creek.  His first wife (incorrect, 2nd wife Mary "Polly" Dickenson), and some of his children were killed by Indians in 1783.  Later he moved to Rye Cove and married his second (3rd) wife Mary "Molly" Blackmore Adams who had her first husband Jessee Adams and ten children massacred by the Indians on Stock Creek in 1782.  Molly was the daughter of Joseph Blackmore and is said to have been killed also by Indians near Fort Blackmore in 1790, but I can find no proof for this.  Henry Hamlin was born in 1740 and died in 1818.  During the Revolutionary War he is reported to have been a Tory.
