From  "Herstory of Patricia Marilyn Cline Long"

I was surprised to learn on Sept. 11 [1952] that Louise was admitted to Cottage Hospital.  Their baby wasn't due til Nov.!   A spinal tap revealed that she had polio--and her "count" was high!   What a scare!   She received two pints of blood.  We were fearful that she'd be paralyzed.  She came through with no problems.  PTL.  She was in isolation and I spent a lot of time with her--was working in the diet kitchen at the time.

• • •

The next [2nd] delivery I saw turned out much better--Sheryl Louise was born at 10:30 on Nov. 19.  Louise had come in at 6:30, & used trielene anesthesia during her labor.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

From  "History / herstory of Cliff and Marilyn Long" by Patricia Marilyn Cline Long

1999 -- Louise wasn't feeling well and we learned she'd had gallbladder surgery in January and her liver didn't look "right".  Sherry told us Louise had liver cancer.  Cliff talked to her to encourage her to have chemo which she was reluctant to do.  • • •

In February we went to Cinci to see the play Cliff was in (Kim helped with the directing).  When we got back, we got word that Louise was disoriented and a call the 11th asking us to come.  Cliff had to get his aredia & we wanted to wait for Andy to join us so we didn't leave til 3.  Before that, we learned that Louise had died.  Members of the Cline (Steve rode with Sam & Jo) and Seckler family arrived the next few days, including Thad, Debbie and their little two.  • • •  Paul and Eunice Noland came the 15th and all of went to the church for lunch prepared by the church ladies.  Visitation followed and the service after that.  We went to Meridien Cemetery for the committal service and headed for home after that.  It was early morning when we got here & then Andy left in good time to get back to Ann Arbor.

1999--.   • • •  Diane was having a bad time.  Her hemoglobin was exceedingly low at times and she had a lot of transfusions, problems with blood clots and spiking fevers.  • • •

As a last resort, Diane decided to go to MD Anderson in Houston and Elyse and Al went with her.

They weren't able to perform any miracles so she too returned home.  The Gammons, Fred and we met in Indy at Sam & Jo's from April 16th-19th.  Diane had just gotten home and was "ready to go".

.  • • •  The next day [Apr 25th], Cliff, Andy and I drove to Indy, caught a plane to San Diego.  Originally we'd planned to go on to SD after our weekend with our siblings but that didn't work out  but the best ticket price was from Indy so....Jeff met us and said Diane had been having a bad time - diarrhea due to something Bruce thought would help.  From the time we got there, Diane was bedfast.  Someone stayed with her all the time; Elyse and her family were there all the time.  Steve flew in the day after we did and Nancy got there the 28th.  Diane was so weak and anxious to leave this world and be with Mom and Dad.  Al agreed to hospice and the nurses were great.  Diane left at 4:52 on April 28th with Elyse leading us in singing "Amazing Grace".  Eric & Clare had just gotten back from Europe but were with Diane before she died.

Patricia Marilyn Cline-5 (Gladys Marie Walker-4, Rosetta Augusta Robertson-3, Isom Robinson-2, Robert Robertson-1)  was born on 05 Apr 1933 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois (Cottage Hospital).

Notes for Patricia Marilyn Cline:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

From  "Herstory of Patricia Marilyn Cline Long"

I, Patricia Marilyn Cline Long, was born on April 5, 1933, the day before my Aunt Vera Finley turned 40.  Perhaps for that reason, we shared a special relationship.  I was born at 7:52 p.m. but my Mom always said I was born at 8 of 8!  I weighed 7#, 10 ounces.  My parents were Samuel Leslie Cline and Gladys Marie Walker Cline and I was their much loved fourth child.  The rest of my family, at that time, consisted of Frederick Walker Cline (born February 1, 1924), Eleanor Elaine (Gammon) born on Sept. 25, 1925 and Kathryn Diane (Noland) who had earlier arrived on the scene on June 25, 1929.

To be the fourth child and still have a baby book faithfully kept was a labor of love for which I'm thankful.  The book was given to be my by Grandmother Cline (Flora Baker) on Dec. 25, 1934.  According to this book, I was born at Galesburg Cottage Hospital with the physician in attendance Dr. R. A. Moffett, a man I remember fondly (though not on my birthdate!).

I was named Patricia (Mom's choice) Marilyn (Dad's choice) so you can see who had the most influence!  "My first ride was in Daddy's car in a freshly painted basket and the ride was to my new home with Mother, Daddy, Frederick and Eleanor (where's Diane??).  Brother and sister sat in the back seat with me to be sure that my basket wouldn't tip off".

• • •

Soon after that, I started to school--first grade as there was no kindergarten.  The school was made of brick with 2 large rooms in the upper part and a large basement.  There were 2 privys outside--one for each gender.  Four grades were taught in each of the large rooms.  When I started school, I had 3 classmates--Sally Hopkins, Judy Stomberg (whose family lived in the farm house on the farm owned by us) and Wendell Cramer.  Occasionally a child would move in & join my class but usually not for long.  Sally moved to Knoxville after 6th grade and by the time I was in 8th, I was the only one in my class!--valedictorian, dunce, whatever, I was "it".  Except for 7th grade, I had very good teachers.  Mom and Dad were so displeased with that teacher that, at the end of the first semester, I went to Abingdon Junior High School and rode there with Diane who, at the time, was a junior in high school.  I enjoyed that and had a chance to get acquainted with kids I'd meet again when I went back for high school.

With 4 classes in a room, it was hard to "tune out" to recitations of other classes so this was an advantage during the "younger" grades as I learned along with the older kids.  It was important to our parents to do well in school and they rewarded us with money according to how many "A's" we got.  That was an incentive!

• • •

Adolescent years are seen by some people as the golden ones - but not for me.  Much of the time I felt like an ugly duckling and I felt "out of it" since my transportation schedule kept me from entering into after school activities.  Unlike my older brothers and sisters, I rarely drove to school but usually rode with factory workers or "the star route lady", Dorothy Whitsitt.  I did participate in "in school" things, such as choir and made some good friends.  Marvin Wolford took a shine to me in my freshman year, even invited me to the prom when I was a sophomore.

That sophomore year was the really traumatic one.  The schools redistricted and began to provide bus transportation - and Delong was in the Knoxville district!  Oh woe is me!  Knoxville and Abingdon had been rivals since at least the time Mom and Dad were attending Abingdon!  They didn't even teach geometry at Knoxville so I never had that class (don't know how well I'd have done if they had!).  I heard a lot about being from Abingdon that year!  There were some nice kids there so it wasn't all bad.

• • •

When I had my interview prior to being accepted to nursing school at Cottage Hospital, I said I wasn't interested in science (wasn't that dumb?).  One guy was professor of chemistry at Knox & I'm sure that didn't go over too well but I was accepted anyway.

On September 19, 1951, I headed to Cottage Hospital to start a new adventure.  We had a picnic at Lack Storey that evening with big/little sisters.  Elaine Larsen (Smith), who I knew from high school and I were roommates.  Mom didn't want me to shave my legs so, on that first night, I asserted my independence and shaved my legs (later she started shaving hers!!).

• • •

Our classes at Knox began on Sept. 24th and we did lots of walking back and forth to chemistry and biology classes there.  On Oct. 25 we got cats to dissect, (ugh!) and continued to "work on" them til the next March.  When we had physicals, I learned I had a heart murmur.  Later, when the examining doctor was teaching medical nursing, he did an EKG and used me as a subject.

Blue and white checked uniforms arrived on Nov. 16; we already had our white shoes and hose and next day we began working on the "floor".  I began to have some anxiety - what if I did something wrong & someone died as a result?  I overcame it!

• • •

Our class was saddened to lose Pat Harris, Elaine Larsen and Maggie Mortland in March because of grade problems.  We were delighted to receive our caps in a special ceremony on March 30th [1952].

• • •

Right after that, I started passing medications--more responsibility--and Nancy Leigh and I became roommates and good friends.  One of the nurse teachers asked me to come with her and give talks about nursing to a Baptist youth group, The Kiwanis Club, The Lions Club and the Kiwanis Club!  Those must've instilled in me a dread of public speaking which I retain to this day (don't remember that it bothered me then!)

• • •

Later in the month [Sept.], I was elected president of the Student Nurses Association and in October, Carolyn Tingley and I went to the SNA convention in Springfield with our director of nursing and one of our teachers.  In November, Mom went with me to Chicago on the Denver Zephyr where I attended the district SNA meetings.

• • •

After our graduation from Cottage, Nancy, Pat and I rented an apartment near the hospital and continued to work there.  We took our state board exams.  We worked til Dec. 20 and then took a few days off before Nancy & I headed for a visit with Diane and Al in California.  • • •

• • •

  • • •  in January, 1955,  Nancy and I went to work at VA Research Hospital, she worked on a "chest" ward and I worked on a neuropsychiatric ward.  They didn't ask our preference, they just put us there!  Nancy worked very hard & I didn't!

We'd determined that we'd go back to school to get a BSN so applied to Illinois, left Chicago in August and went to Champaign-Urbana in Sept.  Dorm housing wasn't available so we stayed in the T dorm--temporary buildings which were "suites"-a bedroom with 2 bunk beds and a common room for studying.  There was a communal kitchen so we cooked many meals there.  Pat, Nancy and I were joined in our suite by Marie Weishaupt who'd been to Hillsdale College and really liked it there!!

The Toledo Times,  Toledo, Ohio, published Thursday, August 8, 2002:

CLIFFORD LONG, 1931-2002 -   BGSU professor a talented sculptor

BOWLING GREEN - Clifford Long, a mathematics professor at Bowling Green State University and gifted sculptor who used his talent to help students visualize math, died of cancer Tuesday in his home here.  He was 71.

Dr. Long was born April 10, 1931, on the south side of Chicago.  His father was a carpenter, and his influence may have been what first attracted Dr. Long to math, his son Steven Long said.

"He liked the angles, the measuring, the visual side of life," he said.

After high school, Dr. Long took a job as an order checker in the stockyards with Armour, Inc.  He left the stockyards for the University of Illinois at Navy Pier in Chicago, where he studied math.  Later, he transferred to the university's Champaign-Urbana campus, where he met his future wife, Patricia Marilyn Cline.

Dr. Long obtained his bachelor's degree, master's degree, and doctorate in mathematics from the University of Illinois.  He took a teaching position at BGSU in 1959 and taught there for the next 35 years.

"So many people just want to do research and get grants," said his son, Thaddeus Long.  "He wanted to teach people to love math

Dr. Long carved the graphical displays of functions - mathematical relationships often too complex for the average person to visualize - in wood and marble for his students to see.

"People would see it and say, `I always wanted to see what a three-foil knot would look like!'" Steven Long said.

Dr. Long took a special interest in computer graphics and the visualization of mathematical ideas.  He was a pioneer in bringing the computer into classrooms at BGSU, and photographs of his sculptures were published in many science journals.

Despite a strong commitment to his work, Dr. Long found time to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and Wheeled Meals, a meal delivery service he helped found.

He was devoted to his family, coaching his children's baseball teams and singing with his sons in a barbershop quartet.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Marilyn Long; sons, Steven, Andrew, and Thaddeus, and daughter, Melinda Gedeon.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Bowling Green First Presbyterian Church, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today and again from 1:30 p.m. until the service begins on Saturday.  The Dunn Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

The family requests tributes to the BGSU Foundation Cliff & Lyn Long Scholarship Fund or to the Presbyterian Church Foundation Cliff & Lyn Long Local Benevolence Fund.

SIAM:  Obituaries:  Clifford Allan Long  Published on: 10/7/2002, SIAM NEWS:

Clifford Allan Long, 1931-2002

Cliff Long died peacefully at home on August 6, 2002, after a seven-year bout with multiple myeloma.  He was a long-time member of SIAM, its Great Lakes Section, and the Mathematical Association of America.

Clifford Allan Long was born on the south side of Chicago on April 10, 1931, to Canadian parents.  After graduating from high school, with his family still experiencing the effects of the Depression, Cliff worked in the stockyards and began to attend Wilson Junior College.  He moved to the University of Illinois (Navy Pier), and then a few years later to the Champaign-Urbana campus, where he obtained bachelor's and master's degrees, and finally a doctorate in mathematics (generalized functions), under Pierce Ketchum.  In 1959, Cliff joined the mathematics department at Bowling Green State University, where he would teach for the next 35 years.

He witnessed the infancy of the computer from the University of Illinois, and followed it through its adolescence while at BGSU, guiding the integration of computers into everyday university life.  He was one of many who helped computing reach a certain level of maturity in our time, when the computer has come to seem but a simple and useful appliance in so many homes.

He had a special interest in computer graphics and the visualization of mathematical ideas.  He started doing computer graphics when it was really difficult to do; in the 1960s, he was using a line printer to do 3D computer graphics.  One of his students even built a small computer-controlled milling machine that Cliff kept in his office to generate models of three-dimensional surfaces.

Cliff had an early interest in computer-aided design.  With a colleague, he was involved in early work at Ford Motor Company on Bézier curves and surfaces.  That experience seemed to drive most of his work of the next 30 years.  He even taught his milling machine to sign his name to his works with Bézier curves.

Bézier curves are closely related to his interest in linear algebra and its teaching.  He was in the linear algebra reform movement before there was such a thing.  In the 70s, he and colleagues (but mostly Cliff) started teaching a linear algebra course at BGSU that had as its goal the singular value decomposition and an emphasis on applications.

Cliff was joined in this work by his son Andy.

Cliff was also a very early pioneer in the calculus reform movement and in the introduction of technology in teaching mathematics.  He had to push the technology, which meant building a portable cart to be wheeled into a classroom, with monitor and Apple II computer, and producing super-8 movies, slide sets, milled models, and even a View-master reel of quadric surfaces.  All this to try to teach mathematics through visualization.

One aspect of the visualization of mathematical ideas that many people have appreciated is his sculpting: Cliff expressed his mathematical interests in artworks that he carved from wood and stone.  Even people who are petrified of mathematics enjoy seeing and touching his mathematical sculptures.

Cliff was most committed to serving students through his teaching.

Marriage Notes:

From "History / herstory of Cliff and Marilyn Long" by Patricia Marilyn Cline Long

1957 got engaged in April, Marilyn worked at Research Hospital in Galesburg after completing 3 semesters at U of Ill. in Champaign-Urbana in January, went to Ill. Research Hospital in April and, after one quarter, graduated with a BSN in June.  When Cliff finished school in June, he drove to New London, Ct. where he worked at Electric Boat in Groton for the summer.  Marilyn flew to LaGuardia a few days after graduation.  She worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital that summer & lived in the nurses's residence there.  In early September, we drove to Chicago, stopped briefly (Cliff's folks had unexpected visitors--2 couples from Canada) & continued on to Delong.  There was a community shower and one given by Diane & Louise in the few days before our wedding on Sept. 7.  Bob Lawson sang, Louise Cline played the violin, Arla Peck played the organ (Marilyn was flower girl at her wedding the same day many years earlier).  Tom Lisle and Rog Hawkins were ushers, Rich Oberg best man.  Pat Horan & Nancy Leigh were bridesmaids & Diane Noland matron of honor.  The reception was held in the church basement--punch, cake, nuts & mints.  The Ozarks was our honeymoon destination & the AAA motel we'd chosen to stay in didn't live up to its publicity so we moved!  Since it was past Labor Day, things were much quieter there than earlier.

LOUISE CARLBERG IS HONORED AT SHOWER EVENT

———

LOUISE CARLBERG, WILBUR QUICK WEDDING RITES

Miss Louise Carlberg, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Carlberg became the bride of Wilbur Quick, only son of Mr. and Mrs. George Quick of Oneida, at a simple but lovely ceremony which took place in the country home of the bride’s parents near Galesburg at 8 o’clock Wednesday night.   The single ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. L. Hadaway, pastor of the Christian church in Abingdon, in the presence of the immediate families and close friends numbering twenty-five.   The bride was given in marriage by her father.

The setting was an effective improvised alter formed with a large bouquet of white snapdragons, white buddleia and white chrysanthemums flanked with Woodwardia ferns and candelabra.

Preceding the rites Mrs. Howard Uhlman accompanied by Mrs. Carl Hessler, sang "Because" and "At Dawning."   Mrs. Hessler played the wedding music from "Lohengrin" by Wagner, as members of the bridal party took their places.

The bride was attractively attired in a lettuce color street-length dress with a French corsage of jonquils worn at the belt line.   She was attended by her sister, Miss Jean Carlberg, who wore a street-length brown dress and a corsage of yellow roses.   The best man was Ross Reynolds of Burlington, Ia.

The mothers of the couple wore dark crepe dresses and white glamelia corsages centered with pink sweetheart roses.

Following the rites refreshments were served from a buffet table with Miss Hazel Henning and Miss Marjory Bruner, close friends of the bride, presiding.   The centerpiece was a bouquet of white snapdragons, buddleia and sweetpeas flanked by crystal candelabra bearing yellow tapers.   The chosen colors of the bride, yellow and white, were used in the ice cream molds which were in the form of wedding bells, hearts and slippers and also in the small decorated cakes.

The bride was graduated from Galesburg High school and is employed by the Blue Bell company in Abingdon.   The bridegroom was graduated from Oneida High school and is a prominent young farmer of that vicinity.   The couple left for a short wedding trip and will be at home after March 1 on the farm near Oneida.

Those attending the rites from a distance were Ross Reynolds and Miss Irma Deets of Burlington, Ia., and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Murdock, Chicago.
