Notes for Isom Robertson:

Occupation: Farmer

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

From biography of C. W. ROBERTSON taken from the genealogy files of Robert Everett Carlberg:

Mr. C. W. Robertson  •  •  •  His ancestors were Scotch, having come from Scotland to the Carolinas and later settled in Kentucky, where his father, Isom Robertson, was born in Warren County.  August 29, 1825, the latter came to Illinois with his people, who located in Warren County which remained his home until his removal to Abingdon in 1878.  After that he resided for a time in Galesburg, but returned to Abingdon, where he now lives.  The story of Mr. Robertson's rise is the story of many a pioneer who came to his raw prairie with determination to wrest from its soil the tribute that patient industry demands.  In retrospect it seems comparatively easy to consider the laying out of a farm, where the soil is rich, and of improving the land and reaping rich harvests, but those who faced the problem in the days, when lack of good roads and facilities for transportation were huge obstacles to contend with, will appreciate the tremendous efforts attending the success of the early farmer.  Mr. Robertson, however, had an added obstacle to handicap him early in his struggle, one that might have disheartened many a young man.  Beginning with nothing he worked his way up until at length he was able to acquire possession of a farm of one hundred and sixty acres of land.  After making his last payment on this, he had to forfeit the same for no fault of his own except over-confidence in a friend who betrayed his trust.  Several other experiences of a similar nature taxed his courage and patience, but in the end success came to him and today his income permits him to live not only comfortably but in affluence.  He spends his winters in California and his summers in Abingdon.  He is a member of the Christian Church and in politics is a stanch republican.  Because of unforeseen circumstances that made it difficult for him to leave home, he did not enlist during the Civil War but hired a substitute who served for him.  His wife, formerly Miss Louisa Richie, of German and French parentage was born in New York City.  Coming west she was married in Warren County, where she resided up to her death.  She died in 1879 and was buried at Meriden; eleven children were born by this union:  Elizabeth, wife of Clinton Scoby, of St. Frances, Kansas;  Emma F., the wife of Donald Lyman, of Abingdon;  C. W. Robertson; Bailey, whose tragic death occurred in the Indian Territory, where his boat capsized while crossing the Spring River on a hunting and fishing trip and he was drowned;  Glen I., who was kicked by a horse and killed, when only five years old;  E. B., a ranchman in St. Frances, Kansas;  L. H., a stockmen living in Abingdon;  Etta, the wife of G. B. Walker, of Warren county, Illinois;  Lena, wife of Frank Marks, of Abingdon, Illinois;  Alta, wife of Howard Smith, of Long Beach, California;  and one child who died in infancy.

Doris Walker was born about 1905 in Illinois.  She died about 1930.  She married Archibald Swann.

Notes for Doris Walker:

From "Herstory of Patricia Marilyn Cline Long"

Doris was the youngest of the 6.  She also was dark haired and a good musician.  She went to live in Chicago and there met Archibald Swann who she married.  She developed tuberculosis and died at a young age.  (I believe she and my grandparents all died within the period of one year.)  "Swann", as he was known to the family, was a taxi driver and continued to come and visit after Doris' death.  Later he married Bea and she was not fondly remembered, as was Swann.

DORIS SWANN, female, white, age Unk,  Died 08-21-1930 in Bushnell Twp, McDonough County;  Cert. # 0550214, filed 08-21-1930.

[Note: The above entry was the only Doris Swann appearing in Illinois Database.  Death is listed as McDonough County (South of Knox County) not near Chicago.  Possibility this could have be location of TB sanitorium.  Still same doubt that this entry is Doris Cline Swann.  Death listed is based on Marilyn Long's description.]

Knitting Hobby

(By Doris A. Schisler)

Maxine Janes hobby started in high school when she knitted for the Red Cross during World War I and II.  She was Maxine Marks then and lived in Abingdon.  For the sake of the older people reading this, her sisters were Vonna Carlberg, Ida Boydstun and Ruth Cullen.  She attended Abingdon Schools graduating from High School in 1920.  She graduated from Western Illinois University in 1935.  She taught In Abingdon Grade and High School, then in Industry, Illinois.

She married Paul Janes in 1941 and were residing in Industry when they retired, Paul as Postmaster and she as teacher.  They did a great deal of traveling.  They spent twenty winters in the Valley of the Rio Grande at Mission, Texas.  She now lives in a very comfortable apartment at Blue Bell Towers here in Abingdon.

She finds as she grows older there are many people who do kind things for her.  She has a lovely lady, Lucy Tinkham, CNA, that come in every morning to help, clean, get groceries, and do anything, and more, that needs to be done.  She met her at the Abingdon Care Center where she gave her excellent care.  Francis Kendrick and Ruth Bovard bring her papers and her mall.  Friends stop in to chat, telephone calls, some long distance, telling her the latest news.  Eight of her friends drove forty miles, brought lunch and played bridge.  She reads books from the John Mosser Public Library, her latest being "Man of the House" by Tip O'Neil and "Hammer" by Armond Hammer.  Besides knitting and crewel embroidery, she enjoys her TV, radio and playing bridge.

She found that knitting was a great way to relieve nervous tension, so she knits sweaters, vests, caps, scarfs, mittens, arm and leg warmers, afghans and her famous "sloppy sox".  She has knit over one hundred pairs of these since July, 1987.

The "Sox" are worn by older people at night who have cold feet, by younger people who work on cement and asphalt tile floors which are tiring to the feet.

She does not sell her work, preferring to give them to relatives and friends. They have gone all over the United States from Washington D.C.  to Oregon, South Carolina, to Minnesota, Canada, Mexico, also to Sweden, Scotland and Hawaii and to an exchange student in Australia and a missionary in South America.

She does not follow directions but makes them by the size of the shoes and kind of yarn used.  Her friends bring her left over yarn or buy the yarn to match their housecoats.

She attributes her good health to her positive thinking.  Though she has osteoporosis in one bone, her general health is excellent.  A friend said, "Eighty five years old and she doesn't even take and aspirin".  She is thankful every day for her good health, her comfortable apartment and her many, many friends.
