Subject: Grandpa Henry

Today, December 8, 2008 is the 50th anniversary of the death of our dear grandfather, Thomas F. Henry of Tobberoddy, Aclare, Co. Sligo, Ireland and later of 8 Mt. Vernon St., Peabody, MA, USA.  Grandpa Henry died on Dec 8, 1958 of Alzheimer's disease (death certificate reads "cerebral hemorrhage") at Danvers State Hospital.  He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery on the Peabody/Salem line.  Buried with him are his wife, Rosanna, his son Tom Henry, Tom's wife, Esther, his daughter Mary Henry Roderick, and Mary's husband, John Douglas Roderick.

Grandpa Henry was born in Co. Sligo on May 2, 1878 to Patrick and Catherine (Murtagh) Henry.  He lived for 80.5 years.  He had 5 brothers (John, Patrick, James, Walter, Michael) and 3 sisters (Maria, Bridget, Ellen).  "Tommy" left Ireland (for Boston) on April 11, 1901 (age 23) from Queenstown, Co. Cork.  He was naturalized on Aug. 13, 1906 in Salem, Essex County, MA.  We know that he returned to Ireland for a period of time, and then returned to the USA (Boston), sailing on March 20,1907.  He was "escorting" Nana Henry (Rosanna Veronica Sheridan) on that trip.  He joined the Turner Tanning Machinery Co. of Peabody on June 14, 1909 as a machinist.  And that is the company he worked for all his life until retirement.  He married Rosanna on Jan. 31,1912 and they had 3 children: Joseph Patrick, Mary Ellen, and Thomas Francis.

I just want to share some remembrances about Grandpa Henry on this 50th anniversary.  We have clear evidence that he helped bring many of his siblings and friends to the USA from Ireland -- providing money for their passage and providing a place for them to live when they would first arrive in the USA.  Additionally, he helped them secure jobs.  He was a kind man.  He purchased a grave at St. Mary's Cemetery back in 1917 so that Nana Henry's sister's husband could have a place to be buried when he died at a young age and left Celia Sheridan Meaney and six young children.  Gramp loved to study the dictionary and was "self-educated".  He drove a motorcycle with a side car, and later purchased a brand new Austin (4 door) from a dealership in Boston.  He walked to work each day and came home at lunchtime.  He was always having friends over and Nana Henry was constantly feeding all of these friends.  Gramp loved to go fishing at night for eels.  He raised birds, peacocks, and turkeys.  He always had dogs as pets.  He had all kinds of machines out in the garage and loved to tinker with them.  He and Nana recited the rosary every night -- listening to Cardinal Cushing saying it on the radio (8 PM).  He loved to sing the song "It's a Long Long Way to Tipperaray." He loved strawberry ice cream especially from Chandler's Ice Cream stand.  When Nana and Grandpa Roderick came to visit from Revere, they always stopped to get that ice cream for Grandpa Henry.  My two sets of grandparents got along famously.  I am not certain if he ever flew.  When Nana Henry and my mother flew to New York (their first flight in the late 1930s), my mom tells the story that when Gramp saw them off at the airport he said to them, "I hope your insurance is paid up."   He dressed to the "9s" for special occasions.  He had a pocket watch and always wore high collars and a vest.  He had a mustache. I think of him every time I see his shaving mug that is in my house here in MD.

My trip to Ireland was so special because I visited spots where he spent time in his youth: Aclare, Carns, Tubbercurry, and Kilmactigue.  And I found, along with the assistance of Living Henry, the grave of Grandpa Henry's parents.  He never visited that grave in Co. Sligo but his brother, Walter Sr., sent him a photo of the gravestone.  And that is how Living Henry and I found the grave.  We suspect that Grandpa Henry, and perhaps some of his siblings, paid for that stone back in 1930.

So I ask you to pause today and think about our dear Irish grandfather who was proud to be an American and who helped others start new lives in America.  One final note: much of the data that my brother-in-law, Living Carlberg, is including in our Henry genealogy, has come from a "little black book" that Grandpa maintained in which he wrote significant events along with their dates.  He was a fine record keeper and for that we are very grateful.  But most of all, he and Nana Henry raised wonderful children; and the Henry and Roderick grandchildren are truly the beneficiaries of the values stressed in the 8 Mt. Vernon St. household .

I have attached a photo of Rosanna and Tommy Henry.  I personally believe it was their wedding photo.

Fondly, Living Roderick
