Living Roderick email of 10/21/2008 Subject: "Report #2: Sheridans" with 6 attached pictures:

Dear Family,

I've labeled this "Report #2: Sheridans".  You may be wondering where is Report #1: Sheridans?

I consider the email titled "Nana Henry's Siblings" (dated 10/17/08) as Report #1.

------------------------------

On 10/3/08, Walter Henry Jr. took me to the homesite of the Sheridans located as follows:

Fross (the townland)

Killasser (the village)

Swinford (the large town)

County Mayo

Ireland.

Fross is located approximately 4 miles from Carns & Tobberoddy.  Although Nana and Grandpa Henry lived in different counties (Mayo and Sligo respectively), the Henry and Sheridan families were quite close in proximity.  Both locations are north of the River Moy.

There is a "new" house built on the Sheridan homesite; a German couple and their new baby live in the home.  Although I did not meet them, Father Dan O'Mahoney (the priest at the Killasser church) told me that he was baptizing that baby on 10/4/08.  The abandoned Sheridan "cottage" was difficult to photograph for two reasons: (1) it is covered by a great deal of brush; and (2) the day we drove in there, two huge dogs were in the driveway barking at us (and I am terrified of dogs), so although Walter was willing to stop the car for me to get out, I could not do so because I was fearful.

I have attached the following photos:

(1)   A sign that we were entering County Mayo.

(2)   The "new" cottage on the Fross property.

(3-6)  Four shots of the old Sheridan homestead.

Living Roderick email of 10/21/2008 Subject: "Report #3: Sheridans" with 5 of the 6 attached pictures:

I wanted to share with you photos of the Sheridan's church -- All Saints -- now known as the Killasser Church.  This is where Nana Henry and her seven siblings were baptized.  It is about a ten minute drive (on back roads) from the town of Swinford to the village of Killasser.  At the present time, the village has the church, the rectory, an elementary school, a community center, and a pub along with homes.

I visited Killasser twice, first with Walter Henry Jr. on 10/3/08 and then with Gene McLoone on Sunday, 10/5/08 where we attended 11:30 am mass.  After mass we adjourned to the Killasser Community Center (down the hill) for a bake sale.  We had a lovely visit with members of the parish along with the priest, Father Dan O'Mahoney who had helped me on Friday with the baptismal records in the rectory.

The attached photos:

(1)   Signposts for Killasser and for the church.

(2)   Walter Henry Jr. and Father Dan in front of the Killasser church.

(3)   Living with the back of the church in the background.

(4)   The altar in the church.

(5)   The baptismal font in the church.

Living Roderick email of 10/21/2008 Subject: "Report #4: Sheridans" with 3 of the 4 attached ictures:

Dear Family,

Just as I wanted to locate the grave of my Henry great grandparents, I wanted to find the Sheridan grave site.  But I have no photo and I have no evidence that there is a gravestone.  Living Henry had done some preliminary investigations prior to my arrival.  Killasser has one cemetery that contains older sections and newer sections.  While meeting with Father Dan at the Killasser church rectory, he informed us that the church does not have death records or records of where people are buried in the Killasser Cemetery.  He told me that death records would be located for County Mayo residents at the courthouse in the county seat -- the town of Castlebar.

I did not have the opportunity to travel to Castlebar and research the death records but that is on my list for my next visit.  I really want to find the records for the Sheridan family.  It appears that Nana Henry's three youngest siblings all died as babies or young children because none of them appear in the 1901 census records that Jim Carlberg has documented.

I have attached photos of the Killasser Cemetery.  Living Henry and I walked around the cemetery looking at some stones.  The older sections were down over a hillside and many of the gravestones were turned over.  So it was just impossible to do serious searching in that cemetery for the limited time we had that Friday.  Oh well, a goal for my next visit.

More to follow.

Fross

Oct 8th, 1925

My Dear Sister, We received your letter some time since.  I thought I would write to you before this but I was not.  I was not able to write, poor father feels mother death terrible.  I think he has got twice as old as he was.  Haven't I got hard trials on this world.  All the comfort I had was mother.  I'm fixed in a poor way now.  I cannot go to the well for water.  I'm so crippled or to wash or do anything or even to get one to buy clothes for the children.  When I look back at my life what am I to do.  Poor mother is always before my eyes.  I cannot forget how I dreamed I saw the two priests with candles and just woke and heard her breathing her last.  Wasn't it awful.  May God rest her soul.  Celia or her family Eleanor has not written to me.  As for poor M.E. [Mary Ellen] she forgets all about us.  I had several letters from Chicago from the Marrens and neighboring girls.  Nice letters of sympathy since mother died.  I hope poor mother is in heaven.  She suffered a hard life on this world.  No one came from Aclare to our funeral but B. Leehany (or Feehany or Teehany), W. Henry and J. Sheridan's.  But still they were not ??? We had all the Swinfords. And Uncle John's friends and connections.  I think I have no more to tell you but say a prayer for me. I miserable.  Goodbye, Belinda

How is the young baby.

(5)  1912 letter to Rosanna in Salem Mass. from her sister Belinda "baby" in Fross, Killasser “congratulating yourself and T. Henry and I wish ye future happiness.” This letter was probably written about the same time as the father's letter.

(6)  Feb 1923 letter to Rosanna in Peabody Mass. from her sister Belinda in Fross. This letter details some of the difficulties with the I.R.A. in and around Swinford. I feel there is more to the letter, but there was only one page with no envelope.
