Patrick1 Henry.  He is deceased.

Notes for Patrick Henry:

30 Aug 2001 Email from Mike Lynch to Living Callahan:  “I am hoping that someone in the family will know without doubt who Patrick Henry’s father was.  I suspect another Patrick Henry, but am most uncertain.  Perhaps very careful scrutiny of the parish records (on microfilm) will reveal the information.”

[sad note: on 3 Jan 2009 we lost Michael Patrick Lynch, our condolences go out to his family and friends, who were numerous.  To quote Living Callahan “He was a fine man.  I will miss him.  He was so proud of his Henry heritage.”]

Having had French tutors for his family.  He in turn bequeathed this estate to my grandfather whom I never saw but I did know my grandmother."  The legal name of this property may be Folio 12358 of the Register of Freeholders County of Sligo (see Joseph Henry 1834-1904).

From 10/19/2008 writeup by Living Roderick titled "IrelandHenry1.doc:"

NOTES:

Although born in Tobberroddy, Walter Sr., along with his parents and siblings, moved to Carns after the death of his father’s uncle, Joseph Henry (d. 1904).  Joseph left his cottages and land in Carns to his nephew, Patrick Henry (Walter Sr.’s father).  Joseph is buried in the Parish of Kilmactigue - old cemetery, with Patrick Henry and Catherine Murtagh Henry.

[From Living Roderick email of 10/20/2008 Subject:  "Addendum: Our Great Grandparents"]  The second photo is of the "old" cottage at Carns which is next to the "new" cottage that Walter Jr. lives in.  The third photo clearly shows the writing "HENRY 1812" carved into the side of the "old" cottage.  So the Henry family was on that property in the early 1800s.

History of Aclare village (from From Joseph Henry's Legacy 3 generation update dated 9 Mar 2016):

Aclare village is in the parish of Kilmacteigue in the southwest of the county of Sligo.  It is a small village consisting of one street, built on the River Inagh, approximately 8 miles from Tubbercurry, 30 miles from Sligo and 16 miles from Ballina.  It lies partly in the townland of Lislea, but mostly in Carns.  The name Áth Chláir is derived from the Irish, meaning the "plank of the ford", which was the only means of crossing the river before the bridge was built.  In 1842, a stone bridge consisting of 3 arches was built by Walter Henry.

How the name Aclare originated is thus (according to the OS Memoirs of Lance-Corporal Henry Trimble in December 1836):  In former days there was no bridge at Aclare but a ford with large stepping stones across the river, and when flooded the people had to throw a plank across those stones to get across the opposite side of the river. In them days there were three brothers of the name of O'Hara.  Their places of residence were in three castles, two of which are in this parish and the third in the parish of Achonry, namely Ballyara Castle.  The Kilmacteige castles were at Bellaclare and Castle Rock.  The eldest brother was Clare O'Hara who lived in Bellaclare (Belclare) Castle.  A in Irish is "a ford," and the Christian name of O'Hara being Clare, A and Clare joined together to make Aclare, being the name and true origin of this market village.

In ancient times the territory belonged to the O'Hara clan.  In the early seventeenth century, the townland of Carns was owned jointly by the O'Haras and Roger McSweeney.  Lislea was held by William Oge O'Crean.  After the Cromwellian settlement, it passed to Sir Arthur Gore, John Boswell and others.  In the nineteenth century, the main landowner was William Ormsby-Gore.

In the 1830s, the village contained 30 houses and had a population of 160. The principal buildings were a police barracks, two corn mills and one kiln. One of the corn mills and the kiln was operated by John Burns.  There was a weekly market on Saturdays and four fairs every year, in June, August, October and November.  Some time later, a Revenue Police Barracks was opened.  Later, in the 1850s there were 35 inhabited houses, the immediate lessors or landlords were William Ormsby-Gore, John McGuinness, Walter Henry and the Evans family.  Businesses were owned by George Alligan, Michael McInerney, Denis Lundy, Henry J McCarrick, Owen Gallagher, Richard and Catherine Leheny, Austin Leonard, John Burns and Michael Higgins.  In 1878, there were 3 public houses in Aclare.

Aclare coordinates are as follows:  54.0333°N  8.9000°W.

Connacht or Connaught Province consists of 5 counties which include Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon & Sligo.

At the time of Patrick and Catherine's marriage, Patrick's uncle Joseph Henry gave them a small block of land and cottage at Carnes, the Townland adjoining Lislea.  It was here that they lived and raised their family.  Joseph Henry died on Jul 7, 1904.  Catherine and Pat's children emigrated to USA (Massachusetts) one by one as they grew up.  The older ones sent money home to pay the passage of the younger ones.  They were all said to be highly intelligent and made many notable achievements.  Ellen emigrated to America at the age of 16.  Tom worked in a tannery.  Pat worked in a foundry.  He lived at Gallows Hill which was named after the spot where witches were hanged.  It is said that one of them was involved in some trouble and ran away to South America to escape the law.  He eventually made his way to Massachusetts.  The youngest son, Walter, was the only one to remain in Ireland and stay on the land.  His son Walter still owns and resides on this farm.

Living Roderick email of 10/20/2008 Subject: "Our Great Grandparents" with 6 attached pictures"

Dear Family,

I have a special story to share with you.  Next to meeting Josephine, James, and Living Henry Jr. for the first time, the most touching moment of my trip to Ireland occurred on Friday, Oct 3, 2008 when Living Henry and I searched for my great grandparents' (and his grandparents') grave site.  I am speaking about Patrick Henry and Catherine Murtagh Henry.  They are the parents of our grandfather, Thomas Henry, and of Living Henry Jr.'s father, Walter Sr.

Let me tell you the story.  When Nana Henry died, my mom took some photos from 8 Mt. Vernon St., Peabody, MA.  Those photos were in my basement here at 1005 Balmoral Drive.  I went through the photos before leaving for Ireland.  One photo showed a gravestone with a man standing next to it.  I did not know who the man was.  But the engraving on the gravestone was very clear.  It read:

-----------------------------------------

Sacred to the memory of

PATRICK HENRY, Carns

Died 24th March 1930

also JOSEPH HENRY,

Died 7th July 1904

At the bottom of the stone it read:

R.  I.  P.

Erected by the HENRY family

------------------------------------------

We knew who Patrick Henry was but we were not certain about who Joseph Henry was.  We have the letter (dated April 2, 1930) that Walter Henry, Sr. wrote to Grandpa Henry upon the death of their father, Patrick Henry.  Within it, Walter Sr. wrote:

"I buried him with Joseph in Kilmactigue.  Pat Dan was at the funeral." (Note: Pat Dan was Nana Henry's brother.)

I took the photo to Ireland and the first evening (9/24/08) I met Josephine and James (in Donegaltown), Jo identified the man in the photo as her father.  On 10/3/08 when I met Living Henry Jr. in Swinford for our day of exploration, I showed him the photo.  He also verified that it was his dad.  Living Henry Jr. had never seen the gravestone.  I had told him about it over the phone about two weeks before I left for Ireland.  He did some preliminary investigating about where his grandparents (our great grandparents) were buried but he made no headway.  He told me on the morning of 10/3 that there are two cemeteries in Kilmactigue Parish (the old one and the new one).  Living Henry Jr.'s parents are buried in the new one.  He had visited the old one between when I spoke with him and when I met him -- and he had no luck (but he had not seen the photo!!!).

And so on 10/3/08, one of our visits was to the old and heavily deteriorating Kilmactigue Parish cemetery.  The first two photos show: (1) the Kilmactigue church; and (2) The cemetery sign as we entered.  The cemetery is adjacent to the church.

Upon entering the cemetery, we entered the "abandoned" Church of Ireland church (minus a roof).  See photo #3.  Inside the church were slabs that contained the engraved names of those buried in the cemetery.  No HENRY was listed and so that was a bad sign but we forged on.  We looked out the end of the church down the hill and we could see the backs of two gravestones that were in the same shape as the stone in the photo I held nervously in my hand (see photo #4).

So we headed on down the hill from the inside of that roofless church and went to the first gravestone.  Living Henry began clearing off all the growth on the front of the stone; he read the name and it was not HENRY.  I was crushed.  But he forged on down the hill in the wet grass (and it was misting) to the next headstone.  I held my breath.  He began wiping the green growth and I walked down to the front of the stone.  I was so nervous.  What began to reveal itself was the name Patrick Henry; and so Living Henry kept scraping the plant growth off the front of the stone.  And then we knew we had found the burial site of our ancestors.  It was the most emotional moment of my trip.  I had so hoped we could locate that grave site.  Tommy Henry (our grandfather) had never been there to pay tribute; nor had Uncle Joe, Uncle Tom or Aunt Mary (the Peabody, MA grandchildren of Patrick and Catherine).  But here we were -- Living Henry, Jr. at his grandparents' grave and Living Roderick at her great grandparents' grave.  When the stone was totally uncovered, it revealed the exact inscription that was in the photo, and then an additional inscription:

CATHERINE HENRY

Died 10th March 1941

--------------------------------------

We prayed at the grave site and we rejoiced that we had connected with our past; that we had been able to pay tribute to our Henry ancestors.  Photos were in order.  Photos 5 & 6 show Living Henry and then me by the gravestone.  I was truly moved by this experience.  And I am so grateful to Living Henry Jr. for partnering with me in finding this sacred site.

In a separate email, I will discuss Joseph Henry who is buried with Patrick and Catherine.  I will also talk about Living Henry Jr.'s theory on why Grandpa Henry had a photo of the gravestone (the photo now in my possession).

Living Roderick email of 10/20/2008 Subject: "Addendum: Our Great Grandparents" with 3 attached pictures"

Dear Family,

I want to follow up on 2 matters related to my email titled: "Our Great Grandparents" (dated: 10/20/08).

Matter #1: Who was Joseph Henry who is buried with Patrick and Catherine Henry?

Joseph Henry (d. 1904) was the brother of Patrick Henry (d. 1883), who was the father of Patrick Henry (d. 1930), who was the father of Grandpa Henry and his eight siblings, including Walter Sr.  Therefore, Joseph Henry was Patrick Henry's (d. 1930) uncle.  In Walter Sr.'s April 2, 1930 letter to Grandpa Henry about their dad's death, Walter wrote: "I buried him with Joseph in Kilmactigue." We know that at Joseph's death on July 7, 1904 at Carns, Aclare, County Sligo, a Catherine Henry was present.  In fact, she was the "informant." NOTE: We do not know if that Catherine Henry was Grandpa Henry's mother -- Catherine Murtagh Henry; OR was the sister of Grandpa Henry's father, Patrick.  Patrick had a sister named Catherine Henry (b. 1847; date of death unknown).

Living Henry Jr. and Living Henry McGroary both have told me that Joseph Henry (d. 1904) left the Carns cottages and land to Grandpa Henry's parents, Patrick and Catherine Henry.  That is where Living Henry Jr. lives today.  Living Henry Jr. believes that Patrick, Catherine and the children did not move to Carns until 1904 when Joseph died and they inherited the property.  This is supported by a couple of different items in Living Carlberg's genealogy research:

(1)  The 1901 Ireland Census of Sligo County, Sligo South, Tubbercurry, Aclare, Tobberoddy shows Patrick Henry, his wife, and 8 children (Michael was not born until July 18, 1901).  The census was collected on April 8 1901.  It shows Mary O'Armstrong as the landowner.  Therefore, the Henrys were NOT living in the town land of Carns but rather the town land of Tobberoddy.  And they did not own the land.  Previous generations of Henrys lived at Carns.

(2)  Also, Bridget Henry wrote a letter to her brother, Thomas Henry and sister Maria Henry on April 9, 1902.  They were living in the USA by this time.  At the top of the letter she wrote: "Tubberroddy, Aclare, April 9th 02."

Apparently, the bottom line is that Patrick and Catherine Henry's children were born and were being raised in the town land of Tubberroddy (or Tobberoddy) and not the town land of Carns.  Both Tubberroddy and Carns are town lands in Aclare.  They are adjacent to each other as is Lislea where Catherine Murtagh Henry was born.  Tubberroddy is not to be confused with Tubbercurry which is the largest town closest to the small village of Aclare.  Sometime after 1902 (date of Bridget's letter), the Henrys moved to Carns, to the property and cottages owned by Joseph Henry.  It could have been as late as 1904 when he died.

-------------------

Matter #2: Living Henry Jr.'s theory on why his father, Walter Sr. sent Grandpa Henry a photo of the gravestone of their parents.

Living Henry Jr. speculates that Grandpa Henry and perhaps some of his siblings (all in the USA with the exception of Walter, Sr.) sent their mother money for a gravestone to be purchased; and that Walter Sr. sent the photo to show Grandpa Henry the outcome of their having sent the money to honor their father.

I have attached a couple of photos.  The first is of the gravestone where Joseph Henry along with Patrick and Catherine Henry are buried.  The second photo is of the "old" cottage at Carns which is next to the "new" cottage that Living Henry Jr. lives in.  The third photo clearly shows the writing "HENRY 1812" carved into the side of the "old" cottage.  So the Henry family was on that property in the early 1800s.

More to follow on Catherine Murtagh Henry and Rosanna Veronica Sheridan Henry.

Love, Living

The following is from Clara Murtagh in her letter Fragments, Concerning some members of the Murtagh Clan dated 29 Oct 1982:

Now for a little information concerning the three Murtaghs who remained in Ireland. Catherine the fourth member, married Patrick Henry, and I think settled near the old home called "Lislea". They reared a large family. I think five sons - Patrick, James, Tom, Walter and Mick, and three daughters - Maria Bridget and Ellen. Most of them married and live in U.S.A. All have now passed away (R.I.P.) but their descendants would be found in, or around Boston and Philadelphia.

email from Living Callahan on 4/2/2014

Bridget did wind up in New York.  My understanding she was extremely upset when guests of her Salem employer had some bad things to say about Alfred E. Smith.  In particular him being a Catholic.  Bridget left their employ.  They begged her not to leave but she refused.  She like them but not their friends.  I don't know when she started to work for the Rothchild's in New York.  I was in their home in Manhattan one day with my parents probably in the late 1950's or early 60's.  I suspect she may have lived with some of her employers at times.  Then I remember her staying with my grandmother for weeks at a time several times during the year.  It was my understanding that she stayed with other NY relatives frequently.  She was rather thin with jet black hair hair always pulled back severely and always wearing a black or dark blue dress.  My grandmother one day had a large portrait in her living room.  I asked her who the people were and she told me it was my grandfather as a young boy as well as Patrick, Catherine and a beautiful young women.  It was Bridget at the turn on the century.  I could not believe my eyes.  She was very much a gibson girl.  My Aunt wound up with the large portrait.  Flo Quinn-Hanrahan sent me a smaller version years later.  I believe the portrait is on either the Henry or Murtagh website.
